Student Government Association

Whitney N. McCoy

Greetings,

Every day is a great day to be a RAM!!! Thank you for visiting the Student Government Association website. We are on the precipice of major changes and endeavors here at Winston-Salem State University. This year "It's All About U!" The growth and development of the student body has allowed Simon Green Atkin's vision to exceed what he dreamed of in our founding year of 1892. With our largest student body in history, this year, SGA’s focus will be to continue the progress that was made in the previous years, making life better for students in increments that will eventually build to mountains of achievement.

Campus Safety and Security will be one of the main focuses of the SGA. We will continue to work with campus police to establish an efficient and effective escort system, more patrols, better lighting, and a successful launch of the Ram Alert system this year.

We must continue to better utilize our alumni network and graduate students who will be great supporters of WSSU. Last year, with the help of our Secretary of Alumni Affairs, SGA increased student donations to WSSU by over 58%.This year SGA will make an effort to engage more alumni and encourage the current student body to give back to the university as well.

We must encourage healthy lifestyles at WSSU. African-American women, the majority of our student body, have the highest rates of being overweight and having STDs compared to other groups in the United States. We will promote healthy eating and living, and sexual awareness on our campus as we work with Campus Recreation, the WSSU Fitness Center, and Student Development, so that we will be healthy enough to lead the world in years to come.

Despite the economic recession that our country is facing, the current status of our country makes it vital that we continue to produce a well-rounded and experienced student. Therefore, SGA will work on financial empowerment by developing workshops on how to invest, budget, and find alternate ways to make higher education affordable.

School spirit, undoubtedly, remains a central focus of your Student Government Association this year – school spirit determines the strength of any campus. Through a variety of forums, pep rallies, social events, and of course Homecoming, SGA will work relentlessly to ensure each student at our university has an experience that instills a sense of pride for the university they call home. In addition to this, SGA will provide the students with free paraphernalia this year, to ensure our pride runs rampant around Winston-Salem and other areas across the nation – even the world!

We must not forget that there is an entire community surrounding the campus of Winston-Salem State University. SGA will represent WSSU at planning meetings for MLK Drive development and safety and continue to represent you in the community as we participate in Adopt-a-Street and leadership amongst youth. We will continue to push the RAMS GO GREEN campaign. It is vital that we continue to reduce, reuse, and recycle.

Chancellor Reaves and SGA have identified customer service as a prime issue at WSSU. School spirit and morale will not improve until we address this. We will continue the Food Service Focus Group with Aramark to give you an opportunity to improve the food you eat in the Café, provide feedback on the staff’s performance, and get involved. Also, we will work closely with campus police to ensure a fair system as they begin to enforce the new parking rules and regulations.

Improving graduation and retention rates is very important to the future of WSSU. We must enter to learn and depart to serve in reasonable amount of time. SGA will fight hard for you to get increased, academic support services, online software that helps you succeed academically, and an advisement system that works. As students, we must take responsibility for ourselves and utilize all of these services. Also, we will continue to develop programming that will assist freshman with their new transition and work closely with the University College to ensure the success of our fellow Rams.

With these goals, the Student Government Association can continue to make progress, and continue to make change IT'S ALL ABOUT YOU, AND WE CAN’T HAVE WSSU WITHOUT YOU!

Sincerely,

Whitney N. McCoy
