School of Health Sciences
The School of Health Sciences offers programs leading to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing and the Bachelor of Science in Clinical Laboratory Science. The School also offers the Master’s degree in Nursing, Occupational Therapy, and Physical Therapy. The purpose of the Winston-Salem State University School of Health Sciences is to provide an opportunity for men and women to pursue an education in nursing and/or allied health fields. The programs provide experiences needed for acquiring the knowledge and skills essential for professional practice in a variety of settings and for assuming changing and emerging roles and responsibilities in healthcare.
The School includes the University/Community Family Practice and Wellness Center. The major purpose of the Center is to promote the holistic health and primary care of the residents in underserved communities in Winston-Salem. Disease prevention and health promotion through an interdisciplinary approach is used. Nurse Practitioners have also been added to the staff, which allows the Center to provide diagnosis and treatment on site.
The Center, which is an interdisciplinary center, is a component of the School of Health Sciences. The students and faculty within the departments of Nursing, Clinical Laboratory Science, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy as well as Sociology, Physical Education, and Therapeutic Recreation provide services to the residents as they complete their clinical practicum.
