Students who manage their academic responsibilities with little difficulty may occasionally find themselves in need of tutoring or other academic support services. The mission of the EXCEL program is to provide our participants with these services, and in turn, the tools necessary to achieve academic success. We offer a variety of tutorials, workshops, seminars and cultural/educational trips that will promote Excellence, instill Character, and Empower young scholars to become future Leaders. We encourage students to be proactive about their scholastic endeavors. The following suggestions will promote your success at Winston-Salem State University. Meet with your professors in the course, and advisors in your major: Build a working rapport, and get a clear understanding of course syllabi and course assignments. Keep all assignments that are handed back. These may be needed to verify or dispute the grade that you may receive in a class.
Attend your tutorial sessions: If you’re being tutored please take advantage of the supplemental instruction being offered. Always remain proactive about your academic career and contact EXCEL if you are having difficulty with your tutoring sessions.
Develop realistic goals and study strategies: Before participating in your first tutorial session, meet with your professor to discuss your expectations in the course. Integrate your professor’s suggestions into the study strategies that will be practiced during the semester.
Take advantage of extra-curricular activities: Studies have shown that students who participant and are actively involved with extra-curricula activities are more likely to be successful academically, socially and culturally.
Acknowledge your achievements and the promise of doing better: Give yourself credit for accepting the challenge of being a college student. Remember today is the first day of the rest of your life so be determined, intelligent, confident and GO FORTH AND FEAR NOT!
Expecting great things from you, Hotep!
