A Message from the Chancellor on Haiti

Winston-Salem State University joins the rest of the world in mourning the losses that have been suffered in Haiti, especially since this tragedy has touched the lives of some members of the Ram Family.  The effort to assist the Haitian people will continue for quite some time, and I know that some of our students, faculty and staff have already participated in those efforts.  If you have not had the opportunity to do so, you may click American Red Cross to make a personal donation.  Additionally, the United Nations has urged American colleges and universities to show solidarity by taking in Haitian students or helping Haiti rebuild its system of higher education.  We are exploring these and other opportunities to become involved in this effort and will keep you updated on any action we might take.

WSSU Students Rally to Aid Haitian Earthquake Victims

Winston-Salem State students have joined others from colleges and universities across the country seeking ways to help the victims of the earthquake that hit the island nation of Haiti on January 12.

Rams Helping Others Prosper Everyday (H.O.P.E.) was conceived prior to the earthquake and has now moved into action.  Rams HOPE is asking that students, faculty and staff send monetary donations to the American Red Cross: International Response Fund.  Rams HOPE is also requesting donations of medical supplies and food and that can be dropped off at the Student Government Association office at 106 Thompson Center or the Campus Life Office at 305 Thompson Center.

The Campus Activities Board donated $1,000 to the Red Cross.  The majority of the contribution was raised through donations and admissions charges from the more than 750 students who attended a Gym Jam on January 15.

The Physical Therapy Department has already donated medical supplies to support the Student Government Association’s collection drive and the Sophomore Class Council is hosting an event on Thursday encouraging students to purchase medical supplies at the C-Store using the declining balance on their Ram cards.  Additionally, students and alumni have donated over 30 boxes and bags of clothes and toiletries that are being delivered to the Salvation Army.

Other activities on campus include a raffle for a television with all proceeds going to the Haitian relief effort, students collecting items and going door-to-door in the residence halls for donations.
