Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT)

The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) is an alternative teacher licensure and graduate degree program for individuals, with qualifying baccalaureate degrees, who seek North Carolina teaching licensure.  Currently, the MAT program is designed for candidates interested in Middle Grades (mathematics/science) and Special Education (General Curriculum).

The MAT program consists of graduate-level courses in the field of education, with specialty area courses in Middle Grades and Special Education.  Independent research and a clinical experience are also included in the course of study. The MAT program has two phases.  Phase one includes coursework designed to address Professional I license competencies for beginning teachers.  Phase two consists of coursework and experiences designed to further candidates’ knowledge, skills, and dispositions to obtain the Professional II teaching license.

The curriculum requires a minimum of 39 credit hours and the completion of additional academic content area courses, as determined by transcript evaluations.  Upon satisfactory completion of the MAT program and North Carolina Professional I licensure, candidates will be eligible for the Master of Arts in Teaching degree and qualify for the North Carolina Professional II teaching license in the chosen area of study.

The MAT program is ideally suited for candidates with baccalaureate degrees and who have an interest in teaching Middle Grades and Special Education. However, candidates who do not have the required number of credit hours (a minimum of 24 credit hours) in the chosen licensure area will have the opportunity to complete these academic requirements through a combination of undergraduate and graduate course work.

The MAT is a unique program that allows individuals to fulfill North Carolina teacher licensure requirements and earn a master’s degree simultaneously. The MAT at WSSU builds upon the University’s historic tradition of providing the community, and the nation, with highly qualified teachers who are committed to making a difference in the lives of students.
