Welcome Prospective Evening-Weekend Students

Thank you for your interest in the Evening-Weekend College (EWC) at Winston-Salem State University (WSSU). EWC began offering entire degree programs via the compressed block format in August 2004. The program was developed specifically to meet the needs of adult students, and allows working adults to complete their degrees entirely after work and on weekends. In most cases, students must juggle the multiple responsibilities of full-time employment, family, community, religious and other obligations. EWC’s goals include providing competitive degree programs for working adults, as well as offering a full range of services. Such services include, but are not limited to assisting with the financial aid process, placement testing, advising and scheduling.

Evening-Weekend College’s compressed block format allows working adults to attend as full-time students who thus are eligible for all benefits (such as financial aid), while focusing on two courses at a time. EWC classes are scheduled in two 8-week blocks per semester. Each block normally features two courses scheduled on Tuesday and Thursday evenings (from 6 - 7:50 pm and 8 - 9:50 pm), and an average of one Saturday per month.  A student taking two courses per block can complete a full time load of 12 credit hours per semester, and additional credits can be earned by taking online courses. EWC students who attend classes year round, including summer sessions, can complete their bachelor’s degrees in four years, or less if transferring credits to WSSU.

If you are ready to take the next step toward becoming an EWC student, the useful links (located to the left) will provide valuable information and resources to assist you.

Admissions Criteria

  1. Every EWC student normally must be at least 21 years of age and must also be a high school graduate (or GED recipient); most applicants must submit official high school or (GED) transcripts.  Applications can be submitted online or in hard copy; the $40 application fee can be paid online, using a credit card, or by check or money order.  Former WSSU students must complete the application for readmission; former WSSU students are exempt from the application fee if they attended within the past year but have not attended another institution.
  2. Transfer students normally must submit official transcripts from high school or (GED) and from all colleges/universities attended; associate degree graduates, bachelor's degree graduates, and applicants who have completed 30 semester hours of college-level credits are not required to submit high school or (GED) transcripts.   Applicants for readmission who have attended elsewhere must submit “official” transcripts from all institutions attended.  WSSU will not transfer more than 64 semester hours total from two-year institutions.
  3. Transfer students applying to EWC normally must have a combined GPA of 2.0 from all colleges/universities attended; transfer students also must be in good academic standing and eligible to return to the last institution attended.
  4. Any transfer student with a combined GPA below 2.0 who has been out-of-school for at least three years may apply for admission.
  5. Placement tests (English & mathematics & reading) are required prior to matriculation (registration) as an EWC student unless the applicant has earned a C or better in college-level English and/or mathematics at an accredited institution.  Placement test scores will be used to make advisement/registration recommendations for specific EWC courses; students may not be permitted to take certain courses until placement tests have been taken.
  6. Transfer Students who graduated from high school (or earned the GED) in 1990 or later who are not at least 24 or who have not been previously admitted fully to one of the 16 UNC-System constituent institutions must meet MINIMUM COURSE REQUIREMENTS from high school or transfer at least 30 semester hours (including 6 of college-level English, 6 of mathematics, 6 of social science, 6 of foreign language, and 6 of science) or have earned the AA, AS or AFA degree.
