 DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICS

 

MISSION

The Department of Mathematics offers a major program in mathematics, a major program option in applied mathematics, and a major program in mathematics with secondary education teacher certification.

The department also offers a minor program in mathematics, general education mathematics courses, and support courses for students majoring in other areas.

GOALS

The goals of the Department of Mathematics are to:

  1. Prepare graduates for entry-level positions in teaching, business, industry and government, or for graduate study.

  2. Develop in the mathematics major the required skills to solve problems, think critically, and communicate mathematically.

  3. Develop skills to solve problems and think critically within the framework of a liberal education.

 

MAJOR PROGRAM IN MATHEMATICS

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES

Students will:

  1. Have the knowledge to use mathematics as a technical tool.

  2. Possess the skills to solve problems, think critically, and communicate mathematically.

  3. Use technology, such as graphing calculators and computers, in mathematics applications.

  4. Be able to effectively use mathematics in their career or graduate school program.

 

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

A. Admission

To be admitted to the mathematics major, the student must:

  1. Complete the general education courses that are required by the mathematics major as well as MAT 2317 Calculus I and MAT 2318 Calculus II.

  2. Complete 38 semester hours of general education core requirements, unless the student holds an associate’s or a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.

  3. Have an overall grade point average of 2.0 or higher.

  4. Earn a grade of at least C in all mathematics courses taken for the major.

  5. Make formal application to the department and complete a successful personal interview.

Students transferring from an accredited college or university should satisfy the criteria listed above. They

may receive transfer credit for courses that fit satisfactorily into the plan for the major.

B. Degree

  1. To graduate with a major in mathematics, a student must earn a grade of at least C in all mathematics courses taken for the major.

  2. In the case of a student transferring from an accredited college or university, the final 30 hours of general graduation requirements for the mathematics major should be completed at WSSU.

  3. A student who holds a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university and seeks a second degree in mathematics must complete the following requirements:

a. Satisfy admission to the major requirements listed for first-degree students.

b. Complete or receive transfer credit for only those general education courses that are listed as general graduation requirements for the mathematics major.

c. Complete or receive transfer credit for the mathematics and computer science courses required in the major.

d. Complete the final 30 semester hours of general graduation requirements for the mathematics major at Winston-Salem State University.

 

MAJOR PROGRAM IN MATHEMATICS WITH SECONDARY EDUCATION TEACHER CERTIFICATION

Students will:

  1. Have the knowledge to use mathematics as a technical tool.

  2. Possess the skills to solve problems, think critically and communicate mathematically.

  3. Use technology, such as graphing calculators and computers, in mathematics applications and in the classroom.

  4. Be able to effectively teach mathematics at the secondary level.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

A. Admission

To be admitted to the mathematics major with secondary-education teacher certification, a student must:

  1. Complete the general education courses required by the mathematics major: a) MAT 2317 Calculus I b) MAT 2318 Calculus II

  2. Complete the remaining 38 hours of general core requirements, unless the student holds an associate’s or a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
  3. Have an overall grade point average of 2.5 or higher.
  4. Earn a grade of at least C in all mathematics courses taken for the major.
  5. Students must earn the secondary education teaching certificate by participating in the teacher education program. Application to that program is normally made during the sophomore year when the student is enrolled in EDU 2304: Sociological, Historical and Philosophical Foundations of Education. Students should consult the guidelines outlined for teacher education programs listed under the Department of Education in the undergraduate catalog. These guidelines concern responsibilities to the director of teacher education and the Teacher Education Committee, requirements for admission to teacher education and student teaching, and conditions for retention in teacher education and recommendation for a North Carolina certificate.
  6. Students who already have a college degree should consult the guidelines for certification of college graduates listed by the Department of Education in its discussion of teacher education programs.
  7. Students transferring from an accredited college or university should satisfy the criteria listed above. They may receive transfer credit for courses that fit satisfactorily into the plan for the major.

B. Degree

  1. A student must earn a grade of at least C in all mathematics courses taken for the major.
  2. In the case of students transferring from an accredited college or university, the final 30 hours of general graduation requirements for the mathematics major with a secondary education teaching certificate should be completed at WSSU.
  3. Students should also follow the teacher education program guidelines mentioned above in the section on admission to the mathematics major with secondary education teacher certification.
