Science Outreach Program

Requirements: |

Must be a high school graduate with a GPA of 3.0, SAT scores of 900+, student must be attending Winston-Salem State University in the Fall semester following the program and also major in either Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics, or Computer Science. There will be a placement test given to the students that are accepted in order to place them in either pre-calculus 1 or 2
All students attending will gain 6 semester hours. |

Introduction |
|
The project will focus on counseling, recruitment, and retention of students through an intensive five-week summer program in mathematics, physical science, and English. The program will provide an early exposure to college life and an opportunity to earn 6 semester-hours of college credit. Diverse teaching techniques including computer-assisted instruction, innovative laboratory activities, visiting scientists, science seminars, peer-tutoring, interactive multimedia, and monitoring progress will be employed to achieve the desired objectives of increasing participation in science and mathematics areas. Using grants from National Science Foundation and the Department of Education, 40 students will be recruited for this summer's Outreach Program. |
| Objective |

The primary objective of this Outreach Program is to increase the number of graduates in biology, chemistry, computer science, and mathematics at Winston-Salem State University. The overall goals of the program are designed to identify and address the academic improvement needs of the college-bound students in these areas. Through this program, we intend to recruit forty high school graduates for an intensive five-week summer program in mathematics, physical science, and English. THE PROGRAM IS ABSOLUTELY FREE!

All students attending will gain 6 semester hours.
- A stipend to pay for room and board on successful completion of all course work;
- All textbooks, notebooks and school supplies;
- All educational supplies for the program;
- Cash prizes will be awarded to top students achieving academic honors;
- Research Assistantships of $3,000 to top 20 students.
