PROGRAM OVERVIEW

The RN-BSN Option is offered on 15 off-campus sites in addition to the on-campus weekend options. The belief that students should be acknowledged for knowledge gleaned from prior experiences and education attracts many students with diverse backgrounds such as paramedics, licensed practical nurses second-degree students, and transfer from other school.

The Accelerated BSN Option is a thirteen month option designed for second degree students. Students must hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or college. The Accelerated Option is funded by North Carolina Baptist Hospital. Forty –five students are admitted every January. Students accepted in the option are required to sign a contract to work full-time as a staff nurse for NCBH for three years after completion of the program.

The purpose of the WSSU School of Health Sciences undergraduate nursing program is to provide men and women from diverse backgrounds the opportunity to pursue a Bachelor of Science Degree in nursing.  The school provides experiences in effective communication and critical thinking necessary for executing therapeutic nursing interventions and for use during other personal-social interactions.  These experiences include theory and clinical practicums needed for mastering the knowledge and skills essential for professional delivery of nursing care in a variety of settings and to multicultural populations.  Flexible options, such as prior technical learning, are considered in criteria for admission.  The school provides an environment conducive to personal and professional growth and lifelong learning for students and faculty.  Further, the objectives for the WSSU RN-BSN completion option include:

·        Utilization of critical thinking in synthesizing knowledge from the biological, physical and behavioral sciences, the humanities and nursing in making nursing practice decisions about clients from diverse and multicultural societies.

·        Utilization of the nursing process to promote a maximum level of wellness through illness prevention, supportive and rehabilitative care.

·        Employment of the nursing roles of caregiver, teacher/counselor to enhance the quality of client care.

·        Employment of effective communication techniques.

·        Promotion of theory development and practice in nursing through interpretation, utilization and participation in research.

·        Demonstration of professional responsibility and accountability in the practice of nursing.
