Time: 3:30 pm - 6 pm
Summary: WSSU Host Screening of the Feature Film "Girl Rising"
The film tells the stories of nine girls from around the world who have overcome tremendous hardships to pursue their dreams of education and a better life. Directed by Academy Award nominee Richard E. Robbins, "Girl Rising" captures the stories of the dreams, the voices and the remarkable lives of these unforgettable girls. Each of the nine stories is written by a renowned writer from the girl's native country and celebrated actresses such as Frieda Pinto, Salma Hayek, Priyanka Chopra, Cate Blanchett and Kerry Washington narrate the stories.
The film will be followed by a discussion designed to stimulate critical thinking about the film's themes and generate ideas for taking action locally and globally.
Around the world, millions of girls face tremendous barriers to education. Yet research shows that educated girls live healthier lives, earn more, and help reduce poverty and conflict in their communities. Removing barriers to girls' education, such as early and forced marriage, gender violence and discrimination, sex trafficking, domestic slavery, lack of access to healthcare, and school fees, means not only a better life for girls, but can lead to a safer, healthier and more prosperous world.
Premiering in the United States on March 7, 2013 on the Eve of International Women's Day, the film has been seen in numerous cinemas, campuses, organizations and private homes worldwide. It is part of the 10X10 movement, a global campaign to educate and empower girls, founded by award-winning journalists at The Documentary Group and Vulcan Productions, with support from the Intel Corporation.
