John W. and Anna Hodgin Hanes Lecture

Summary:  The 2017 John W. and Anna Hodgin Hanes Lecture will feature writer and historian Lawrence Jackson, Bloomberg Distinguished Professor at John Hopkins University. The lecture, titled, "Long Quarter at the River Bend," will focus on African American social reformer and abolitionist Frederick Douglass and Maryland Eastern Shore. The lecture is free and open to the public. Location: Diggs Gallery


Professor Jackson has established a formidable reputation for his work chronicling African-American literary history. His 2010 book, “The Indignant Generation: A Narrative History of African American Writers and Critics,” won several national honors, including the Black Caucus of the American Library Association prize for non-fiction. He has also published numerous essays and reviews for outlets, including The Washington Post, Baltimore Magazine, The New York Times Book Review and New England Quarterly.
