National Jazz Recording Artist Michael Phillips and Renowned Record Label VP Charles Whitfield to headline WSSU Annual Golf Classic on April 29

   National jazz recording artist and saxophonist Michael Phillips and renowned record label Vice President Charles Whitfield will headline Winston-Salem State University’s Annual Golf Classic on April 29 at the Winston Lake Golf Course.

    Phillips, the only musician to appear on recordings by Prince, Stevie Wonder and the late Michael Jackson, is an artist on the Hidden Beach Recordings label.  He recently released his third solo offering M.P.3. in fall 2010 to critical acclaim.  The record debuted at number four on the Billboard Contemporary Jazz Chart.  Guests on the CD included Stevie Wonder, Norman Brown, Marcus Miller and Natalie “The Floacist” Stewart.  Phillips was also the first non-athlete signed to Michael Jordan’s “Brand Jordan” line, a division of Nike, Inc.

    Based in the company’s Santa Monica, CA, headquarters, Whitfield is responsible for key areas at Hidden Beach Recordings including retail sales, artist relations and corporate outreach.  He also helped create and implement the Hidden Beach National College Internship Program.  Whitfield has managed artist and repertoire (A&R) coordination for such artists as Jill Scott and Brenda Russell.  He is a native of North Carolina and a graduate of North Carolina Central University.  Whitfield will serve as the WSSU Annual Golf Tournament’s honorary captain.

    Nearly 200 local business and civil leaders are expected to participate in the tournament.  Proceeds will support WSSU’s general scholarship fund.  Golf start times are 7:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. at the challenging Winston Lake Golf Course.  The event will feature a shotgun start with a four-player Captain’s Choice format, with lunch sponsored by Bib’s Downtown.

    Prizes for first, second, third and fourth place teams will be awarded.

    “We are pleased to have celebrities join us for this important event to raise scholarship funds for WSSU students,” said WSSU Chancellor Donald J. Reaves. “In the current economy this type of activity has more significance than ever, and we look forward to entertaining our friends who support the university.”
