Dr. Legette was recognized during WSSU’s May 12th graduation exercise by a UNC Board of Governors member who presented him with an engraved bronze medallion and a stipend check for $7,500.00.
Dr. Legette's strengths were summarized as including immense pedagogical skills, thorough knowledge of instrumental music techniques, knowledge of jazz/wind band music, and saxophone performance skills. He has also been described as an individual of great personal and professional integrity, loyal to students, the University, and the community. Dr. Legette states "without development and growth in the aesthetic attributes of man's potential, man is in a real sense less complete…less human." He believes that "the expression and experience of music in all cultures and races is an essential [sic] of man's health, because his healthy life is one of interdependence…Sensitivity to beauty and the making of beauty is basic to man's experience. The use of music for man's health, happiness, and comfort is universal."
In addition to teaching and advising students, Dr. Legette serves on numerous University committees and is well regarded in the Winston-Salem community as a musical performer, composer, and arranger with original copyrighted material.
