Parking FAQ

Why do we oversell parking (ratio between parking spaces and parking decals sold)?
In the past, the rapidly expanding number of new students, faculty and staff quickly outpaced the number of available parking spaces. However, with the new WSSU Parking initiative, overselling lots will be minimized to prevent individuals from not having a space in their lot.

Why is it so expensive to park on campus?
Compared to the other universities in the UNC system WSSU's parking fees are a bargain. WSSU parking fees ranks amongst the lowest in the system.

Why is there not enough parking?
WSSU has consistently been one of the fastest growing universities in the system. This equates to a substantial increase in the need for parking spaces based upon the growth of the campus.

Will there be a commuter parking lot?
Yes. WSSU is now using a Parking Lot letter system, and permits will be assigned to a specific lot. For example, if you are assigned to Lot H, you can only park in Lot H. If Lot H is full, you will need to park in the shuttle lot. All permit holders will be allowed to park in the shuttle lot at the Bowman Gray stadium in the event they are unable to find a spot in their designated lot.

If I do park in a commuter/ visitor lot, will it be gated?
None of the commuter/visitor lots are gated.

As long as I have a parking decal, why should I get ticketed?
The new parking policies will be heavily enforced to maintain safety, security and convenience for everyone on campus. As part of the new Parking Lot letter system, it is required that you park in your designated area to prevent being ticketed. All student parking will be assigned to designated lots. If the lot is full, you may park in the Shuttle lot at Bowman Gray Stadium. You must have a permit to park on campus unless you are in a metered space.

Why do we have parking tickets?
WSSU issues parking tickets to enforce the parking policies, and to maintain the safety, security and convenience of the new parking system for everyone.

Why can't we have a parking deck?
It is not cost effective. A parking deck can cost anywhere from $10,000 - $15,000 per space.

Will there be reduced parking rate for motorcycles and/or scooters?
The fee for motorcycles and scooters is $20.00.

Will there be bicycle lanes and designated bike racks put up around school?
Perhaps in the future as we strive to make our buildings meet the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) criteria.

Can faculty/staff member park in student parking without getting a ticket?
No, you can only park in the lot to which you are assigned. Otherwise, you will be ticketed.

Will spaces assigned to faculty/staff be close to the building in which they work?
There is no guarantee that your assigned lot will be close to your building. The parking lots are not large enough to accommodate all of the employees in adjacent buildings.

Can campus police enforce reserved parking?
Yes, all lots will be heavily enforced.

How will parking be assigned for temporary employees?
Temporary/Day Permit holders must "park and ride" in the shuttle lots.

How will WSSU ensure the safety of the shuttle lots?
Campus Police will provide routine patrol throughout the day. We will also place an emergency call box in the shuttle lot for emergency calls.

Will there be more shuttle buses?
For your added convenience, significant improvements also will be made in the shuttle lots to include additional paved surfaces and new shelter areas. Additional drivers and a handicapped-accessible bus will be added to the scheduled shuttle routes to decrease wait times and provide consistent transit service for a maximum number of passengers.

Will the shuttle buses run more often?
Additional drivers and a handicapped-accessible bus will be added to the scheduled shuttle routes to decrease wait times and provide consistent transit service for a maximum number of passengers.

If I have a parking decal, am I guaranteed a parking space?
Based upon the new zoned parking plan you should be guaranteed a space in the lot you are assigned. Increased enforcement will decrease frequent violators who park in lots without a pass, or a pass with a different zone.
