Winston-Salem State University ranks among the nation’s top institutions in providing high quality, baccalaureate-level higher education to African-American students. As evidence of this position:
- WSSU placed 78th among all universities 14 in conferring baccalaureate degrees to African-American men and women in the most recent ranking of the “Top 100 Degree Producers” by the respected publication Black Issues in Higher Education (which covered data from the 2003-04 academic year).
- In the same study, WSSU placed 28th among Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in conferring baccalaureate degrees to African - American students.
Leadership in Health Services
Health Services is an “academic center of excellence” at Winston-Salem State University, and a focal point of the institution’s commitment to offering high-quality educational opportunities to minority students that enable them to succeed in their careers and contribute to society. The university ranks among the nation’s elite schools in conferring baccalaureate degrees in the Health Sciences to minority men and women, particularly African-Americans. As evidence of this leadership position:
- WSSU ranks 37th among all universities in conferring Health Sciences baccalaureate degrees to minority students according to the most recent ranking of the “Top 100 Degree Producers” by the respected publication Black Issues in Higher Education (which covered data from the 2003-04 academic year).
- In the same study, WSSU ranked 13th among the nation’s universities in conferring Health Sciences baccalaureate degrees to African - American men and women.

The study of Science and Technology is an “academic center of excellence” at Winston- Salem State University, and a focal point of the institution’s commitment to providing high-quality educational opportunities that enable African- American students to succeed in their careers while contributing to society. The university ranks among the nation’s top universities in conferring baccalaureate degrees in “Computer and Information Science and Support Service” fields to African-Americans. As evidence of this position:
- WSSU placed 36th among all universities in conferring baccalaureate degrees in Computer and Information Science to African-American men and women according to the most recent ranking of the “Top 100 Degree Producers” by the respected publication Black Issues in Higher Education (which covered data from the 2003-04 academic year).
Leadership in Science and Mathematics
Winston-Salem State University ranks among the nation’s top institutions in conferring baccalaureate degrees in mathematics and the sciences to African-American students. As evidence of this position:
- WSSU placed 30th among all universities in conferring baccalaureate degrees in the Physical Sciences to African-American students in the most recent ranking of the “Top 100 Degree Producers” by the respected publication Black Issues in Higher Education (which covered data from the 2003-04 academic year).
- WSSU ranked 37th among all universities in conferring baccalaureate degrees in Mathematics and Statistics to African-American students according to the “Top 100 Degree Producers” study.
- WSSU placed 40th among all universities in conferring baccalaureate degrees in the Social Sciences to African-American men and women according to the “Top 100 Degree Producers” study.
- WSSU ranked 48th among all universities in conferring baccalaureate degrees in Biological and Biomedical Sciences to African-American students according to the “Top 100 Degree Producers” study.
