Department of Education Graduate Fellowship
In 2009, Winston Salem State University was awarded a 3 million ($500,000 over the next six years) U.S. Department of Education grant to enhance graduate education in the STEM areas, which includes science, technology, engineering and mathematics, and allied health fields. The grant is to be used to increase the university's ability to produce master's degree graduates in the following graduate programs: Nursing, Physical Therapy, Computer Science and Information Technology, Rehabilitation Counseling, Occupational Therapy, and the Master's of Arts in Teaching (MAT). Based on financial need, full-time graduate students are able to receive full tuition coverage as well as travel expenses assistance for presentations and more. Assistantships
The Graduate School offers three types of assistantships - Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA), Graduate Research Assistant (GRA), and Graduate Administrative Assistant (GAA). We offer three levels of assistantship:
- Full-time
$10,000 for the academic year – 20 hours of service each week - Part-time
$ 5,000 for the academic year – 10 hours of service each week - Quarter-time
$ 2,500 for the academic year – 5 hours of service each week

Initial Graduate Assistantship Appointment
Each student who is offered a Graduate Research/Teaching/Administrative Assistantship will be notified in writing of the terms and conditions of their appointment. The following documentation is required for all new or initial Graduate Research/Teaching/ Administrative Assistantship appointments:
- Graduate Assistantship Application (Fall & Spring Only)
- Graduate Assistantship Application (Summer Only)
- Completed Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
- Completed and signed Terms and Conditions for Appointment document
- Original, completed I-9 Form
- W-4 and NC-4
- Drivers License and Social Security Card
- Transcript
The following documentation is required for all new or initial International students for Graduate Research/Teaching/Administrative Assistantship appointments:
- Graduate Assistantship Application (Fall & Spring Only)
- Graduate Assistantship Application (Summer Only)
- Completed and signed Terms and Conditions for Appointment document
- Copy of completed I-20 Form or copy of current Visa issued
- Copy of Financial Certification
