CLA+ Registration

Collegiate Learning Assessment (CLA+)

If you are an eligible student and you commit a small amount of time to this assessment endeavor, you will receive valuable information for yourself, assist WSSU in its assessment efforts, receive an invitation to a pizza party and be entered into drawings for prizes, including iPads and $100 gift cards

When you participate in the CLA+, your confidentiality will be maintained.  Winston-Salem State will not report individual level data, only a combined report on how all test candidates performed.

What is the CLA+?

The CLA+ is a ninety (90) minute online test that consists of open-ended questions and is designed to measure critical thinking, analytical reasoning, problem solving, and written communication skills.  To learn more, visit the CLA website.

How do I sign up?

If you are willing and eligible to participate, please complete the brief survey at least one day ahead of your preferred session.

How do I get a pizza party invitation and a chance to win prizes (e.g., iPads, $100 gift cards)?

  • Be eligible & sign up
  • Be punctual in arriving at the testing site at the beginning of the session
  • Present picture ID
  • Complete all parts of the CLA+
  • Recruit your eligible friends to participate
    • If you are an eligible student who completes the CLA+ this spring, you can be entered into the drawings for $100 gift cards one additional time for every eligible student you recruit to complete the CLA+.
    • The student(s) you recruit must be eligible and must complete the CLA+ for you to receive an additional entry.
    • There is no limit on the number of eligible students you can recruit.  However, each participant can only list one person as their recruiter.  For example, you could recruit 5 different students for 6 total entries in the drawings, but each of the 5 students you referred would have to name you, and only you, as the person who referred them.  If someone else had previously claimed “recruiter credit” for that student, you would not receive an additional entry.

Drawings will take place and prizes will be awarded after all testing has concluded.

Why is the CLA+ important to students?

If you are a qualifying student, you can provide valuable data to yourself by participating in the CLA+.  Participation in the CLA+ will give you the opportunity to…

  • Refine and further develop your critical thinking and writing skills.
  • Receive a detailed score report that indicates areas of strengths and weaknesses.
  • Obtain a score report that can be used as supplemental material for internship, job or graduate school opportunities.
  • Gain practice with standardized testing that could be helpful for graduate entrance exams (e.g., GRE, LSAT, MCAT) or pre-employment screenings (e.g., Wonderlic Cognitive Ability Test)
  • Compare your critical thinking and writing skills to other students.
  • Utilize portions of CLA+ Career Connect
    • Qualifying students (those with mastery levels of Proficient and Advanced) can claim a certified badge through a secure vault hosted by Pro Exam.
    • Qualifying students (CLA+ examinees with top scores) will be invited to participate in a virtual career fair hosted by Brazen Careerist later this spring.  By attending the virtual career fair students will have the opportunity to meet with selected employers interested in hiring recent college graduates.

Why is the CLA+ important to WSSU?

Eligible students can provide valuable data to the university by participating in the CLA+.  Participation in the CLA+ will give you the opportunity to…

  • Assist Winston-Salem State in showing institutional effectiveness.
  • Provide valuable data to Winston-Salem State administrators that will highlight where improvement is needed.  By improving the institution, the value of your degree can increase.
  • Help WSSU obtain data for the Voluntary System of Accountability, an initiative of public 4-year universities to provide clear, accessible, and comparable information on the undergraduate student experience.
