Dr. Carolynn Berry is Associate Provost for Assessment, Research and Curriculum and a professor of Exercise Science. Since joining the WSSU faculty as an assistant professor in 1985, Dr. Berry has served in a number of roles that have increased in responsibility.

From 1988 until 2000, she served as chair of the Department of Physical Education.  She held a six-month administrative internship in WSSU’s Office of the Chancellor in 1997, served as the interim director of general studies, co-chaired the university’s Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) accreditation reaffirmation team from 1998-2000, and served as an assistant to the vice chancellor for academic affairs for assessment.

Dr. Berry was named director of Institutional Effectiveness and Planning in 2002.  Between 2003 and 2010, she has served as the assistant provost for planning, assessment, and research. During the 2006-2007 academic years, she served as interim dean of University College. In August 2007 Dr. Berry was appointed interim dean of WSSU’s School of Graduate Studies and Research.

She has authored or co-authored numerous academic articles and has presented at many conferences across the country both in her academic discipline of exercise physiology and in the areas of institutional effectiveness and student retention. Dr. Berry has also been the principal investigator of several funded grants.  She recently served as a team leader for the National Graduation Rate Outcomes Study and has been a consultant with several universities in the area of institutional effectiveness and outcomes assessment.

Dr. Berry has served on numerous committees and boards including: Forsyth County American Cancer Society Health Services Committee; Forsyth County American Red Cross Health Services Committee; Wellness Improvement for State Employees Advisory Board; Forsyth County Fitness Council; Forsyth County Be Healthy Coalition; Special Children’s School; and editorial board of the Journal of Interdisciplinary Research in Physical Education; and as the president of the Piedmont Flyers.  She currently serves as the executive director of the southeast Chapter of the American College of Sports Medicine and is on the board of the Carolinas Cycling Association.

Dr. Berry earned her B.S. and M.A. degrees from Wake Forest University and a Ph.D. from Texas A & M University in College Station, Texas. While completing her undergraduate degree, she had the opportunity to do two internships in the North Carolina governor’s office.  She was inducted into the honor society Phi Kappa Phi at Texas A & M University.
