Abeer A. Mustafa Director |
Abeer Mustafa joins WSSU after serving as an Assistant Director at the University of Houston for 3 years. Previously, she was at Rice University as a General Manager for 6 ½ years. Her career in multi-family housing started in 1994 and lead onto construction of multi-family development. Abeer has 19 years of progressive professional experience in student housing, property management, strategic planning, facilities, new construction, budget management, and team development, solution-oriented change agent for department, division and institutional reorganization. She played a vital role on new construction of LEED certified residence hall at University of Houston and Rice University. Abeer manages all aspects all of the Department of Housing and Residence Life with the number one goal of student success in mind. She is actively developing thematic housing, living learning communities, and a faculty-in-residence program along with needed facilities improvements and new construction. When not working, Abeer is involved in the community, an avid reader, works out, and, of course, spends as much time with her twin boys and husband here in Winston Salem. She is willing to present on budget management, service leadership, long-range planning, “going from good to great, and being your personal best”. Abeer will start her Ed.D program at Northeastern Summer 2013. |

Peter Blutreich Associate Director |
Pete Blutreich, earned undergraduate degrees from NCSU in History and Political Science, a Masters in Higher Education Administration from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale (SIUC), and is presently a PhD student at NC A and T University in Leadership Studies. His housing background began as an RA at NCSU, a graduate assistant at both UNC-Charlotte and Southern Illinois University Carbondale with internships at Georgia Tech and Tulane University. His first professional position as a Residence Coordinator at UNCW provided a great experience and allowed him to found a new student organization. As the Assistant Director at Austin Peay State University he continued to develop a new programming model and advise RHA. His next role was as the Director of Residence Life at Illinois College for six years managing all aspects of the program including instituting a new assignment process and student conduct program. Returning to NC as the Associate Director for Housing at Wake Forest University he later came to WSSU as the Assistant Director for Housing and now serves as the Associate Director for Housing and Residence. Pete is interested and willing to present on issues of goal setting, time management, value clarification, impact of residence life on academic success, leadership development, and the impact of new populations on higher education in NC. When not at WSSU Pete is most likely chasing one of four boys, doing some homework, or enjoying reading science fiction/fantasy or the occasional historical book. |

Mary Young Smith Student Services Specialist |
Mary Young Smith has served in the Housing and Residence Life Department in capacities of Clerk Typist, Secretary to the Dean of Men, Administrative Assistant, Housing Coordinator, Interim Director of Residence Life, Assistant Director of Housing and Residence Life/Assignments and currently serves in the capacity of Student Services Specialist for Assignments. She earned a Business Administration Comprehensive (B.A.) Degree at Winston-Salem State University in 1992 and graduated Magna Cum Laude. She has collaborated with both faculty and staff within the divisions on campus as well as mentored students. She is currently in her twelfth year with the Corporate Volunteers Program of the Greater Winston-Salem Chamber of Commerce, which is a partnership with WSSU and the Elementary schools in the Winston-Salem vicinity where she spends time with kindergarten students that need special attention to improve their proficiencies within their age group for an hour per week. Mary enjoys interacting with residents who arrive new excited and eager to live and learn and then to experience their mature and holistic development as they successfully depart to serve gives her great pleasure to know that she has made an impact on some of them; ‘reach one teach one’. Corry A. Colonna Area Coordinator of First-Year Halls |
Corry Colonna brings with him to Winston Salem State University experience from three other institutions of varying size and type. A graduate of Saint Vincent College in Latrobe, PA, Corry started his career teaching 8th grade English on the edge of Appalachia in Western Pennsylvania. After earning his Master’s degree in Literature at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Corry returned to his alma mater and served as a Residence Hall Director at Saint Vincent College. While at Saint Vincent College, he also taught freshmen writing and literature courses. He continued teaching first-year students as he pursued his PhD at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. After completing coursework, he then took the position of Rector at the University of Notre Dame. He worked to develop a community of men at Notre Dame. He was also involved in Student Life Council, Staff Development Initiatives and the Integration of Student Life with Academia. In 2012, he joined the staff at WSSU as the Area Coordinator of First Year Halls. He is interested and willing to present on issues of Masculinity, Men in Transition, Faith and Spirituality, Staff Development, Leadership, and the Integration of a Holistic Experience for college aged students.

Elizabeth Roberts Ackman Area Coordinator of Upperclassmen Halls |
Elizabeth Roberts Ackman has been in the higher education field for 10 years starting in Admissions and moving into Housing and Residence Life. Elizabeth enjoys working with college age students and helping them learn that a college education is a tool to open many doors for the future. Elizabeth has been at WSSU for 5 years and helped implementing many initiatives. Elizabeth came from Johnson & Wales University: Miami and was a Resident Life Coordinator. Prior positions were with Daemen College and SUNY Potsdam in Admissions. Elizabeth holds a Bachelor’s degree from Keuka College in Sociology and Masters of Education from Southern New Hampshire University in Curriculum and Instruction; concentration in Educational Leadership. Elizabeth is interested and willing to present on issues of Leadership, Time Management, Total Responsible Person, Staff Development, Leadership, and Importance of Assessment for college-aged students.

Jeffery Alexander, Jr., the oldest of four, was born in raised in Southern California. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication from California State University Channel Islands and his Masters of Arts in Education from Ashford University. Jeff comes to Winston-Salem State University with housing experience from California State Monterey Bay, Radford University, and California State Channel Islands. Jeff has a fiery passion for helping students excel and grow. Jeff believes it is his duty to share his wealth of knowledge with students in an effort to help them better their lives.

Lametric Bishop hails from Memphis, TN. She received her bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Tennessee State University and is currently pursuing her Master of Education degree in College Student Personnel. Prior to working at Winston-Salem State University, she was employed by Rhodes College in the Office of Student Activities. She chose to pursue a career in Higher Education because it allows her to positively influence and shape the lives of young people. She has a passion for working with students and the development of each student by using a holistic approach. It is her hope that encouraging creativity, integrity, collaboration, and servant leadership will assist each student as they travel on their own road to life-long learning and achievement. |

Melissa Brown Hall Director Atkins Hall |
Melissa Brown serves as the Hall Director of Atkins Hall. She has worked in residence life for three and a half years, most recently at UNC School of the Arts in Winston-Salem, NC. Melissa holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education/Biology from SUNY New Paltz and a Masters of Arts degree in Student Affairs in Higher Education from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. She joined WSSU as the leader of Atkins Hall in 2012.

Theodis (Theo) A. Chunn, Jr., has served as a Hall Director since August 2012, returning to his alma mater from his most recent position as a Resident Director at High Point University. Chunn holds a B.A. in Mass Communications from Winston-Salem State University (WSSU). He earned a M.S. in Higher Education at Walden University where he is currently pursuing his doctoral degree in Higher Education Leadership. Chunn lives with the passion to encourage, unite and educationally and socially motivate young men and women to be successful and productive. When Theo is not fulfilling his duties as a Hall Director, he enjoys spending time running, reading, or working through a non-profit called TCJ Motivations, Inc.

Amyia Hardy is from Long Island, NY and joined Winston-Salem State University Residential Life in October 2012. Amyia received her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from SUNY College at Old Westbury, where she served as a Resident Assistant. She is currently pursuing her Master of Arts in Higher Education and Student Affairs at Stony Brook University. Amyia enjoys creating personable relationships with students in order to foster growth and development during their on-campus experience. In her spare time, she loves volunteering, traveling and spending time with family and friends.

Jessica originates from Ramseur, North Carolina. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Bennett College in Greensboro, North Carolina. She began her career in Housing and Residence Life at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University where she worked for three years as a Graduate Hall Director. While at North Carolina A&T, she was awarded the Distinguished Leader Award and Residence Hall of the Year twice. While working on obtaining her Master’s Degree, she gave back to her alma mater as a Resident Director for Reynolds Hall at Bennett College. Jessica aspires to obtain her doctoral degree in Leadership with a concentration in Higher Education. She considers herself fortunate to be in a field that allows her to do what she loves and that is to serve the people.
