“Education is not a question of mechanics; it is rather a question of ethics and morality. Education is primarily an effort to realize in man his possibilities as a thinking and feeling being.”
Dr. Simon G. Atkins (1863-1934)
Founder of Winston-Salem State University
In establishing the institution that would become Winston-Salem
State University, Simon Green Atkins set out to develop a distinctive intellectual community that would provide each student with an education dedicated to realizing their “possibilities as a thinking and feeling being.”
The College of Winston-Salem State University is the heart of that intellectual community. As the largest academic division of the university, The College is home to some of the institution’s oldest and most prestigious academic programs, cutting-edge research and teaching centers and initiatives, and an outstanding faculty.
The College is distinctive in uniquely blending the liberal arts with professional programs in business and education in offering students a broad liberal education that prepares them to meet the challenges of the 21st century.
