Since its founding in 1892, 12 men have held Winston-Salem State University's highest rank. Although the title of this position has changed from principal to president to chancellor, and the name of the school has changed 5 times - beginning as Slater Industrial Academy and currently known as WSSU - leadership by foresighted African-American educators has remained a constant.
