TIPS FOR FACULTY MENTORS
Mentors should work closely with mentees to ensure a scholarly presentation. The following tips might prove helpful:
- Read abstracts and PowerPoint presentations very carefully to ensure that they are free of mechanical errors and statements which are vague or unclear. Please remember that often sound effects or moving figures in a PowerPoint distract from the content of the presentation. Colors should also be used sparingly and should be avoided for text.
- Have students practice their presentations to ensure that they remain within time limits, that audio/visuals are coordinated, that students speak clearly and with confidence, and that they can respond to questions.
- Make sure that posters are attractive and evidence scholarly work.
- Work with students to ensure that they understand that business attire is conservative: no low-cut dresses or tops, no tight clothing, no three-inch heels (young ladies should wear jackets with pants or with dresses or tops that are sleeveless), no excessive jewelry; young men should wear dark suits (avoid suits that are faddish) or slacks and a jacket.
