Department of English
The Department of English offers a high quality major and minor programs in English and dramatic arts, while additional recommended minors that complement the English major include: foreign languages, speech communication, and humanities. The department also supports the University's general education curriculum through evolving courses in writing, speech, literature, languages, and African American culture to equip students with twenty-first century skills, including critical reading, critical thinking, critical writing, creativity practice, and global competence.
The Department of English offers a broad range of options. Specialized courses include Literary Aspects of the Bible, African-American Culture, Creative Writing, Black Writers in American Literature, Literature of the African Diaspora, and Adolescent Literature.
Faculty members have earned numerous recognitions including People to People Ambassador and the UNC Board of Governors Excellence in Teaching Award. Several hold prominent offices and memberships in academic, professional, civic, and social organizations. Faculty members have published novels, historical texts, and academic textbooks. The faculty consistently empowers and promotes the department nationally and internationally by lecturing, researching, presenting at conferences, and publishing in diverse journals.
As international travelers to Africa, Brazil, Malaysia, South Korea, and other destinations, faculty members bring rich multicultural and multi-linguistic perspectives to their concentrations.
