 Student Accomplishments:

Congratulations to Ms. Bethany Melton (Biology major) and Mr. Joab Odera (Molecular Biology major) for receiving the 2011 Provost Summer Research Fellowship award.  Dr. Johanna Porter-Kelley will serve as the research mentor for these students.

The following Biology students were awarded the opportunity to participate in the 2010 University of Wyoming NASA Space Grant summer research program:

The focus of this program for Winston-Salem students is to provide students a unique opportunity to work in a research lab with a graduate student mentor. Students will work on individual projects in collaboration with mentors for six weeks at the University of Wyoming in Laramie, Wyoming.

Mr. Donovan Griffith, senior in Biology, was accepted into the 2010 summer MED program at UNC-Chapel Hill.

Congratulations to our recent graduates:

Mr. Jobren Dingle, B.S. in Biology (December 2008), was accepted into the Master's in Medical Sciences Program at Hampton University.

Mr. Brandon Murray, B.S. in Biology (December 2010), was accepted into the UNC School of Dentistry and the East Carolina School of Dental Medicine.

Mr. Jamar Slocum B.S. in Biology (May 2010) was accepted into Meharry Medical College, Nashville, TN.

Jasmine Peterson, B.S. in Biology (May 2010) and STEM scholar, was accepted into Emory University, George Washington University, and the University of Pittsburgh Schools of Public Health.  She will be attending Emory University School of Public Health in Fall 2011, and has received substantial scholarship support.  In addition, Ms. Peterson recently returned from her second trip to South America, where she helped build and develop a library for children at an orphanage.

Ms. Shanika Brown, B.S. in Biology (May 2010), Ms. Kelly Newsome, B.S. in Biology (May 2010), and Mr. Evan Parrish, B.S. in Biology (May 2009), were accepted into the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program, Winston-Salem State University.

Ms. Cynthia Grady, B.S. in Molecular Biology (May 2010), was accepted into seven medical schools: Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University, Indiana University School of Medicine, Morehouse School of Medicine, Meharry Medical College, University of Louisville School of Medicine, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, and Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine. She is attending University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.

Ms. Lore McBroom, B.S. in Biology (May 2010), was accepted into the Tuskegee University School of Veterinary Medicine.

Ms. Jennifer Paige, B.S. in Biology (May 2010), was accepted into the University of South Carolina School of Medicine and the Medical University of South Carolina. She is attending the Medical University of South Carolina.

Ms. Ja'Pel Sumpter, B.S. in Biology/Chemistry (May 2010), was accepted into the University of South Carolina School of Medicine and the Medical University of South Carolina. She is attending the Medical University of South Carolina.

Ms. Bethany Bonner, B.S. in Biology (May 2009) and STEM scholar, was accepted into the Doctor of Pharmacy degree program at Howard University's College of Pharmacy.

Ms. Janel Gordon, B.S. in Biology (May 2009) and STEM scholar, was accepted into University of Louisville School of Medicine. She will be conducting research, shadowing in an underserved clinic, and gaining professional development at Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women's Hospital this summer (2010). Ms. Gordon has also been appointed the National Pipeline Protocol Chair for the Student National Medical Association, with the goal to increase the number of minorities entering into medical school, especially from WSSU and the state of Kentucky. In addition, she will be a student clinic director next year (2011) for one of the student-run free clinics in Louisville, KY (LIFE Clinic), which treats women who have succumbed to drugs and alcohol.

Ms. Divine Nininahazwe, B.S. in Molecular Biology (May 2007), was accepted into the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine, where she is a member of the class of 2013.

Melissa Nelson, B.S. in Molecular Biology (May 2005), was recently interviewed on Fox television about her work on Shaken Baby Prevention.

In the News:

Ms. Mia Lassiter gave an excellent presentation at the National Association of African American Honors Programs (NAAAHP) conference, November 9-13, 2009, in Miami, FL. Her presentation was titled The Role of MoeGT5 in the Moenomycin Biosynthetic Pathway. It was well-developed and thoroughly executed . Mia Lassiter also won 3rd place (and $100) in the HONORS GOT TALENT contest.

Mr. Justin Brown participated in the poster session at the National Association of African American Honors Programs (NAAAHP) conference, November 9-13, 2009, in Miami, FL. His presentation was titled Solving a Clinical Dilemma: Using PRC to Distinguish Multiple Primary Tumors from Metastatic Disease in the Respiratory System and Aero-digestive Tract. He explained information clearly, concisely and comprehensively. Kudos to Justin!

The Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign is a collaboration between the Minority Association of Pre-Medical Students (MAPS), Health Careers Opportunity Program (HCOP) and Project Strengthen.

Mark Brooks and Michael O. Evans presented a poster entitled: Role of Adaptor Protein Complex 3 in Leishmania major on Friday, February 13, 2009 at the North Carolina A&T State University Biology Symposium. Mr. Brooks and Mr. Evans are research students in Dr. Johanna Porter-Kelley's laboratory. For more information about this work, please contact Dr. Johanna Porter-Kelley.
