Dr. Brent Harvey
Assistant Professor of Music - Low Brass
Raised in Apple Valley, Minnesota, Brent Harvey holds a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Minnesota, formerly studying with Mr. Ross Tolbert of the Minnesota Orchestra, and a Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, previously under the tutelage of Dr. Dennis AsKew. Harvey has performed with the Minnesota Orchestra, the National Wind Ensemble in Carnegie Hall, New York, the Catania International Festival Orchestra in Italy, the Pine Mountain Music Festival Orchestra in Michigan, the Fountain City Brass Band based in Kansas, the Charleston and Long Bay Symphony Orchestras in South Carolina, and the Greensboro, Winston-Salem, and Fayetteville Symphony Orchestras in North Carolina, among others. He has additionally served as the primary substitute tuba player for the New World Symphony in Miami Beach, Florida. Harvey is a Mike Finn Mouthpiece Performing Artist and actively performs with the da Capo Brass Quintet (www.dacapobrass.com), who released their first CD on the Delos Music label in January 2012 entitled from the beginning.
Dr. Harvey currently serves as Assistant Professor of Low Brass at Winston-Salem State University (WSSU). He is also the resident Instructor of Tuba and Euphonium for the Community Music School at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts (UNCSA). Harvey has worked as a Clinician for the North Carolina Music Educators National Conference, Carolina Band Festival, North Carolina Trombone Workshop, and the UNCG Summer Music Camp, and has served as Assistant Director of the "Tubas In The Summer" Chamber Music Camp.
Brent Harvey Co-Hosted the Southeast Regional Tuba-Euphonium Conference (SERTEC) in a joint effort between WSSU and UNCSA, in association with the International Tuba-Euphonium Association in March 2009. In November 2009 and May-June 2011, Harvey toured with the Fountain City Brass Band (FCBB) throughout the United Kingdom, France, Belgium, and Holland, recorded a CD entitled Over the Rainbow on the SP&S Music label, and won the Scottish Open International Brass Band Championship. FCBB was the only United States brass band invited to the competition and the first American brass band to win this prestigious award.In addition, Brent Harvey is a Chief Warrant Officer in the U.S. Army, North Carolina National Guard, and is the Commander and Conductor of the 440th Army Band stationed in Raleigh; this military unit is tasked to provide musical support for government, military, and civil functions throughout the state of North Carolina and the Southeast. CW2 Harvey completed Warrant Officer Candidate School and joined the Warrant Officer Corp. in August 2008. He is in his 13th year of service in the Army National Guard. In his free time, Brent enjoys running, racquetball, golf, soccer, college sports, the outdoors, and motorcycles.
