Message from the Dean
Welcome to Winston-Salem State University!
Faculty and staff who comprise the School of Education and Human Performance (SEHP) are united by the common purpose of preparing the best teachers and human performance professionals for our state, nation, and world communities.
As the first HBCU (Historically Black Colleges & Universities) to award elementary education degrees to African American teachers and the first in the nation to offer a motorsports management program, we take a special pride in our rich teacher education tradition and great responsibility for offering the very best newly developed programs.
As you browse the new Web Pages, we hope you discover useful information about programs and points of interest. In addition to academic programs, we believe that a complete education takes place in and out of the classroom setting and in on- and off-campus environments, including national and international arenas. Consequently, we are extremely proud of extracurricular activities, especially the international experiences, which provide our students an opportunity to grow personally and professionally, to expand their appreciation of other peoples and cultures, to go beyond their comfort zones, and to understand their roles in a complex, dynamic, and diverse world.
If you are a prospective student, we invite you to consider joining the more than 1,300 pre-majors and upper- division students that are enrolled in SEHP’s undergraduate and graduate programs. Let us know about your interests and we will be glad to provide more detailed information about specific academic programs.
If you are an alumnus, an alumna, or an advocate of the School, we invite you to witness the impact that your support, especially your generous financial contribution, has had on the lives of students who have come through these halls of learning. We invite your ideas, your advocacy, and your continued support.
If you are already a part of the SEHP, as a student, faculty, or support staff, we hope you find the Web Pages useful and easy to navigate. We also invite your contribution to helping ensure that our Web Pages are always current, informative, user-friendly, and vibrant.
Being the dean of the SEHP is truly an honor and a huge responsibility. When I go around to local school districts, community agencies, sports events, recreational facilities, and other places of employment in North Carolina, I witness firsthand what so many of our graduates are doing and the important contribution they are making in the lives of others – children, adults, persons with disabilities, recipients of public services, and others who simply desire enriching experiences to improve the quality of their lives. It is very rewarding to see the influence our faculty and staff have on the many individuals who have come through our programs and who are now contributing members of a global society. But as I close this message, I am acutely aware of how much more we need to do. I invite you to join us in our continuing pursuit of excellence and our goal for a better educated and more equitable society.
