Secondary Mathematics Education
Program Description
The Secondary Mathematics Education program prepares candidates to teach 9-12 high school mathematics. This major leads to a Bachelor of Science degree in Secondary Education with a Concentration in Mathematics. Candidates who successfully complete the program also meet the requirements for recommendation to the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction for an initial teaching license.
Admission Requirements for the Major
Students wishing to pursue a degree in this program must be formally admitted to the teacher education program by the end of their sophomore year. Requirements for admission follow:
- Completion of the university’s requirements in English, speech, and mathematics courses with a grade of “C” or better in each course.
- Earn a grade of at least C in all mathematics courses taken for the major.
3. Completion of a minimum of 45 semester hours with a cumulative grade point average of
2.5 or better (4.0 scale). Transfer students must earn a 2.5 on a minimum of 12 hours
completed at the university.
4. Completion and approval of a formal interview.
5. Proof of proficiency in mathematics, reading, and writing as demonstrated on the
SAT/ACT or Praxis I exam.
- Completion and approval of essay writing exam or proof of exemption based on Praxis I written exam.
- Submission of a completed application (including professional references) that verifies completion of all of the above requirements. Applications for admission are due by the last day of classes each term. Admissions decisions are made at the end of the spring semester, summer II term, and fall semester.
Progression Requirements
Students must maintain a 2.50 GPA and earn a grade of “C” or better in all major courses, including academic concentrations. All pedagogical core courses numbered above 4000 require admission to the teacher education program and may not be taken until all admission requirements have been met. Some courses have prerequisites that candidates must fulfill before registering for those courses. Students who register for courses without meeting prerequisites will be asked to drop the course or will otherwise be administratively withdrawn from the course.
Special Requirements
In the case of a student transferring from an accredited college or university, the final 30 hours of general graduation requirements for the Secondary Education with a Concentration in Mathematics major should be completed at WSSU.
A student who holds a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university and seeks a second degree in Secondary Education with a Concentration in Mathematics must complete the following requirements:
- Satisfy admission to the major requirements listed for first-degree students.
- Complete or receive transfer credit for only those general education courses that are listed as general graduation requirements for the Secondary Education with a Concentration in Mathematics.
- Complete or receive transfer credit for the mathematics and computer science courses required in the major.
- Complete the final 30 semester hours of general graduation requirements for the Secondary Education with a Concentration in Mathematics major at Winston-Salem State University.
