Manuscript Submissions

The Journal of Best Practices in Health Professions Diversity only accepts submissions via email at journal@wssu.edu. Files should be submitted in Microsoft Word and should include the following elements: complete author names, author contact information, including credentials, departmental and institutional affiliations, abstract (250 words or less), keywords, references, tables, illustrations, and legends.

The Journal of Best Practices in Health Professions Diversity: Research, Education and Policy (JBPHPD: Res, Educ and Policy) welcomes a variety of manuscripts including original research reports; theoretical or philosophical essays; policy/legislative updates including implications for increasing diversity within health professions and/or addressing health disparities; ethical debates; literature reviews, meta-analyses, or meta-syntheses; book reviews, case studies, and Letters to the Editor, and announcements of upcoming conferences or events. Authors must specify a manuscript type for each submission.

Manuscripts must comply with page limits for its specified manuscript type. Page limits noted below do not include title page, abstract, tables, figures, or references.

  1. Original research reports - Maximum 20 pages
  2. Theoretical or philosophical essays - Maximum 20 pages
  3. Policy/legislative updates - Maximum 20 pages
  4. Ethical debates - Maximum 5 pages
  5. Literature reviews, meta-analyses, or meta-syntheses - Maximum 25 pages
  6. Book reviews - Maximum 2 pages
  7. Case studies - Maximum 15 pages
  8. Letters to the Editor - Maximum 2 pages
  9. Announcements - Maximum 1 page

The JBPHPD: Res, Educ and Policy is published twice a year. Manuscripts submitted for consideration in the Spring issue should be received by the Managing Editor no later than November 15th. Manuscripts submitted for consideration in the fall issue should be received by the Managing Editor no later than May 15th.

Manuscript Preparation

All submissions must have the following components, unless otherwise noted. Manuscripts that do not meet these requirements will be returned for technical revision prior to being sent out for peer review.

Title page – submit as a separate file/attachment

Include the following on the title page:
a) complete manuscript title
b) authors' full name, highest academic degrees and affiliations
c) name and address for correspondence, including telephone number, email address, and fax number
d) acknowledgements, credits, or disclaimers; include acknowledgement of all funding sources.

Abstract – not needed for Letters to Editor or Announcements

Limit abstract to no more than 150 words. Do not include references in the abstract. Limit the use of abbreviations or acronyms. Briefly summarize the major issue or problem being addressed along with major findings and/or conclusions.

Keywords

Keywords are used to index manuscripts when published. Provide 4 or 5 keywords. Place beneath the abstract preceded by the heading "Keywords". Use keywords found in the Cumulative Index to Nursing & Allied Health Literature (CINAHL) or The National Library of Medicine's Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) whenever possible.

Text of manuscript

1.  Double space entire manuscript in PC formatted Windows 95 version of Microsoft Word 7.0 or later version.

2.  Leave a one-inch margin on all sides.

3.  Do not right justify.

4.  Number all pages consecutively in the upper right-hand corner.

5.  Include all tables and figures with their legends at the end of the manuscript following references. One table or figure per page. Produce tables using Word programs and eliminate any dividing lines within tables. Tables and figures should provide information beyond that which is presented in the text. Figures must be camera-ready.

6.  Write out the full term for each abbreviation when it is first used unless it is a standard unit of measure. Do not include identifying information (authors' names) in the manuscript. When citing your own works, list them as "Author, YYYY" in the citation and reference list. This will maintain anonymity during the review process.

7.  Approve or remove all "track changes" prior to submitting document.

References

Use the most current APA Manual of Style for citations and reference lists. No more than 30 references should be included on the Reference List (with the exception of literature reviews, meta-analyses, and meta-syntheses which may include more references depending on the number of pertinent studies).

Tables and figures

Tables and figures should provide information beyond that which is presented in the text. Tables and figures should be placed at the end of the manuscript. One table or figure per page. Produce tables using Word programs and eliminate any dividing lines within tables. Figures must be camera-ready. A maximum of 4 figures and/or tables combined are permitted per manuscript. Review articles may contain additional tables as warranted.
