MISSION
To engage communities in using research strategically to shape action and response to community safety issues.
VISION
Communities where all people are safe to live, work, learn and play.
BACKGROUND
Established in January 2001, the Center for Community Safety (CCS) is a community-based center of Winston-Salem State University that helps shape the way local communities respond to violence impacting residents. As a hub for decision-making on violence prevention, CCS spearheads the use of new approaches and draws upon partners in addressing significant local public safety issues. Its primary goal is to promote the creation, development, and sustainment of successful community partnerships, to create safer, more stable communities.
The CCS is one of only few such university centers, particularly at a minority-serving institution (HBCU) that is so actively involved in university-practitioner-community collaboration around public safety issues.
Since its inception, CCS has been recognized both locally and nationally as a leader in sustaining and leveraging community-based initiatives, developing innovative projects, and as a training center for communities in strategic justice planning. CCS's approach is to use its resources to support and build capacity of partner organizations rather than to perform direct services.
