Schools Come Together for September 11 Observance
Winston-Salem State University, Wake Forest University and Salem College are coming together for a 9/11 Day of Service and Remembrance on Sunday, September 11, at 4:30 p.m. at the Clock Tower on the Winston-Salem State campus.
The service, with a theme of tolerance and unity, is open to the public and will feature Anthony Farmer, Winston-Salem fire chief, as the guest speaker. Students from the three schools will be performing. Additionally, local heroes will receive awards and veterans of the recent Iraq and Afghanistan wars will be honored during the event.
Beyond the remembrance service, the three schools also are partnering with local agencies to create volunteer service projects as a way of honoring those who were impacted by the events of September 11, 2001. Projects ranged from building a Habitat for Humanity House to cleaning local streams. HandsOn Northwest North Carolina worked with nonprofit organizations to develop the opportunities and support was provided by My Sistas Keeper, Inc. and the Mayor’s Office.
