WSSU Employees Recognized for their Achievements
Nine employees from Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) were recently honored for their accomplishments through the inauguration of the Chancellor’s Achievement Award program.
The program was designed to recognize and reward support and management staff members who served with distinction in the areas of innovation, initiative or service. All employees had the opportunity to submit nominations to recognize individuals who demonstrated exceptional performance in one of three categories, with the six first place winners receiving $1,000 each.
Winners in from the support staff were: Sarah Hinshaw, graphic designer, for innovation; Garrett Garms, university photographer for initiative; and Latoya Wiley, budget analyst, for service.
Hinshaw was recognized for her level of creativity, quality and customer service in handling hundreds of design requests annually that impact everything from student recruiting to Homecoming attendance. Garms was acknowledged for the long hours he spends to meet the university’s photographic needs with a quality product that helps share the school’s story through pictures. Wiley was honored for establishing processes that improved the effectiveness and efficiency of her department which has led to better service offer to the faculty, staff and external clients.
The three winners from management were: Ether Joe, director of the A.H. Ray Student Health Services, for innovation; Connell Mayor, head football coach, for initiative; and Owen Cooks, associate vice chancellor for facilities, for service.
Joe was selected based on her work to the reaccreditation of the Student Health Services and her efforts to increase the efficiency of its operations to better serve the students. Maynor was selected based on his efforts to transform WSSU football into a winning program that has created an excitement on the campus, with alumni and the Winston-Salem community. Cooks was honored for his level of dedication, attention to detail, commitment to customer service, and his leadership on numerous university construction and acquisition projects.
In addition to the six winners, three other employees were recognized for their achievements and each received a $500 award. They are: LaMonica Sloan, director of Career Development Services; Wilbourne Rusere, director of Budget and Analysis; and Carol Fonville, administrative assistant in Finance and Administration.
