WSSU Team Wins Rookie of the Year at Regional Competition

April 3, 2013

A team of six students from Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) earned Rookie of the Year honors at the Enactus U.S. Regional Competition in March in Charlotte, one of 10 regional competitions held across the country by the international organization that brings together students, academics and business leaders to use the power of entrepreneurial action to focus on community outreach projects.

The team from WSSU included: the president of Enactus WSSU, Johnene Benson who is a senior management major; Nardia McEwan, vice president of the group and a senior management major; Dominic Nwanji, historian and a junior accounting major; and project leaders Oshshanee Keys, a senior management major, Briana Rose, a sophomore accounting and English major, and Mary-Nina Ukariwo, a junior accounting major.

"We have literally built this team up in only six months and to be able to work together to achieve this goal was more than rewarding," said Benson.  "We had a few bumps in the road, but those pushed us all the harder to prove that driven leaders can make a difference in a community.  Under the leadership of our advisor, Melvin Williams, Enactus WSSU has completed over 100 service hours and organized four projects in Winston-Salem."

The WSSU team presented the results of its projects and was evaluated by business leaders serving as judges.  The projects for this academic year were teaching materials from the Junior Achievement Personal Finance program to students at Carter G. Woodson Charter School; partnering with Duke Energy and Habitat for Humanity Forsyth County to teach an energy conservation seminar to low-income families; teaching and assisting homeless individuals the skills to help them find a job; and a project to improve the Simon’s Green Acres Garden for WSSU students, faculty and staff, as well as neighbors around The Enterprise Center on Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive.
