Tuesday, September 2, 2022, 3:45-5:15 Empowerment in a Globalized World: Foreign Languages Skills Empowerment in a 21st Globalized World Scholarship and Fellowship Information Session. Hall-Patterson Room 325 - Classroom Majors and minors in world languages are required to attend, but all students are welcomed. Information will be shared regarding required coursework for major and minor programs, study abroad opportunities, and available scholarship and fellowship. Participants will also play language and culture trivia games. Refreshments will be served.
Thursday, Oct 20, 2022, 3:30 – 5:30pm Challenging Media Stereotypes: Film & Discussion In recognition of Hispanic Heritage Month, the Department of World Languages and Cultures will host a screening of Latinos Beyond the Reel: Challenging a Media Stereotype on Thursday, Oct. 20, at 3:30 p.m. in Hall-Patterson 205. The documentary follows the cinematic portrayal of Latin Americans, encompassing stereotypes, images and thought-provoking segments that challenge the media's depiction of Latin American men and women. A discussion will immediately follow the screening. Refreshments will be served. All WSSU faculty and students are invited.
Thursday, Oct 27, 2022, 3:30 – 4:30pm Dia de muertos altar Come help decorate an altar for Dia de muertos! Traditionally a Mexican holiday, based on Aztec traditions, Dia de Muertos is celebrated on November 1. Bring photos and/or objects to place on the altar to celebrate the life of your deceased loved one in preparation for the observance. Hall-Patterson 328.

The Department of World Languages and Cultures Celebrates Black History Month with Readings and Recitals by Spanish majors and minors.

Please join the Spanish majors and minors as they celebrate Black History Month at Winston-Salem State University by reading and reciting works by Afro-Latin writers to showcase the presence of African-descended peoples and their contributions in the USA, the Caribbean, and Latin America.

Cultural Heritage Video Presentation Competition

- Submissions must be uploaded by March 25 at 12:00 a.m.
- This contest is open to WSSU students, faculty, and staff.

World Language Video Competition
You are invited to share your creativity and your love of languages and cultures. Upload a song, dance, skit, poetic recitation, or other performance art in the target language or representing the target culture. Visit the World Language Flipgrid!

vA certificated Master Instructor in Taichi with 18 years of training in Hebei Medical Rehabilitation Hospital, China, Dr. Tang has six years of experience teaching Taichi in North Carolina. Inspired by a wise saying, "When there is silence, one finds the anchor of the universe within oneself," Dr. Tang would like to continue contributing his experience to communities around Forsyth county.
Caique Vidal and Batuque is a unique band that brings infectious energy and riveting dance grooves to the stage. “Batuque” (pronounced ba-TOO-kee) means to drum. The band delivers an explosive performance integrating the sounds of Afro-Brazilian percussion with keyboards, bass, guitar and horns to produce an innovative version of samba, reggae, salsa, bachata, pop, rock and Bossa Nova. Vidal and Batuque just released their debut EP titled TYSM (Thank You So Much). TYSM exemplifies the diversity of rhythms and genres performed by the band during their live shows. Vidal and Batuque have performed in music festivals and universities across the nation providing an insight to Afro-Brazilian music and culture. Caique Vidal and Batuque’s live performance is pure passion and energy!
Dr. Couto is our Portuguese professor and will be cooking brigadeiro and here are the ingredients. Ingredients: 1 can of sweet condensed milk, 2 spoons of chocolate powder and chocolate sprinkles. Some butter to make the ball shaped desserts.
Ms. Mushi is our Swahili professor and we’ll be showing a video of her cooking karibu chakula.
