Students interested in studying abroad are invited to start off with a bit of research by looking through the various program links below, including summer study abroad opportunities. Once you have a better idea of what program opportunities are available to you, attend one of the OIP Study Abroad Information Session and/or contact the study abroad advisor in OIP.
Winston-Salem State University very often offers its own faculty-led program abroad, usually during spring break or summer. Locations have included Kenya, Ghana, China, Italy, and France. To see what faculty programs are currently on offer, check the WSSU Featured Programs page.
UNCEP - University of North Carolina Exchange Program Semester and year exchange programs in Australia, Brazil, China, Finland, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Mexico, and Uruguay. Students pay their usual WSSU tuition and fees here and pay room and board to institution abroad.
ISEP - International Student Exchange Program Semester and year exchange programs in over 35 countries around the world. Although ISEP offers many programs taught in foreign languages, allowing students to utilize and/or improve their foreign language skills, there are also many programs offered in English, not only in English-speaking countries, but also in countries such as Finland, Germany, Korea, Sweden, and Finland, to name a few. Students pay their usual WSSU tuition, fees, and room and board here. Note that ISEP also has some "direct" (non-exchange) programs, so check with the study abroad advisor in OIP when making your site selections.
Third-Party "Direct" Programs
AIFS - American Institute for Foreign Study AIFS is one of the oldest and largest study abroad providers in the world. Programs in over 20 countries are available, almost all without previous language learning experience requirements. Programs are offered in Australia, Botswana, Brazil, Chile, Costa Rica, Czech Republic, New Zealand, Peru, Russia, South Africa, Turkey and other countries. Some scholarships are also available from or through this provider.
ISA - International Studies Abroad ISA is a third-party provider that offers programs around the world for students, including programs in some locations that might not be available through other exchange programs. Program locations include Argentina, China, Dominican Republic, Jordan, Morocco, and Panama, as well as more traditional locations. Some internship programs are also available.
CIEE - Council for International Educational Exchange Since its creation in 1947, has continued to focus on the needs of today’s global citizens—students, educators, host families, and institutions in the USA and abroad by customizing and by providing specially adapted educational offerings, ranging from film studies in the Czech Republic to community public health programs in Botswana. Some scholarships are also available from or through this provider.
SIT - School for International Training A pioneer in experiential, field-based study abroad, SIT offers semester, summer, and academic year programs for undergraduate students in Africa, Asia and the Pacific, Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East, as well as comparative programs in multiple locations. SIT programs focus on critical global issues in specific geographical and cultural contexts using an interdisciplinary approach. Studying with host country faculty and living with families, students gain a deep appreciation for local cultures and become immersed in diverse topics ranging from the politics of identity to post-conflict transformation, from global health to environmental policy. Some scholarships are also available from or through this provider.
OTS - Organization for Tropical Studies though Duke University OTS aims to promote interest in education and research in tropical biology and to provide leadership in education, research and the responsible use of natural resources in the tropics. To address this mission, OTS conducts graduate and undergraduate education, facilitates research, participates in tropical forest conservation, maintains three biological stations in Costa Rica and conducts environmental education programs.
