Research Opportunities Summary
July 1st to July 19th, 2013
The HS-RAP will acquaint high school students about career opportunities and research experiences in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). Three-week non residential program on the campus of WSSU; Students gain "hands-on experience" in developing an insight into science research under faculty supervision
Raising Achievement in Mathematics and Science
The RAMS Scholar program is a National Science Foundation funded HBCU-UP program that aims to increase and strengthen the number of minority students who enroll, major in and graduate from any of the STEM majors of Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics and Computer Science at WSSU. It also aims to encourage such students to matriculate into graduate programs at major research institutions.
Students who have an interest in a career in the sciences can join the program either as freshmen applicants or as rising sophomores. Successful applicants receive $300 per month (4 payments per semester) stipend each semester and perform research under the supervision of their research mentors, starting at the basic level and advance on with the same mentor.
This is an exciting opportunity for students aspiring to be future scientists!
Summer Science Academy
June 30th to August 2nd, 2013
The project will focus on counseling, recruitment, and retention of students through an intensive five-week summer program in mathematics, science, and English. The program will provide an early exposure to college life and an opportunity to earn 6 semester-hours of college credit. Diverse teaching techniques including computer-assisted instruction, innovative laboratory activities, visiting scientists, science seminars, peer-tutoring, interactive multimedia and monitoring progress will be employed to achieve the desired objectives of increasing participation in science and mathematics areas. Using grants from National Science Foundation, 15 students will be chosen for this summer's Science Academy.
Summer Undergraduate Research Experience
May 20th to June 28th, 2011
The National Science Foundation HBCU-UP at WSSU invites WSSU and community college undergrads to participate in its summer program in biology, chemistry, computer science and mathematics.
