World Languages and Cultures

Bienvenido.  Bienvenue.  Bemvindo.  Karibuni.

Welcome to the Department of World Languages and Cultures! Located within the College of Arts and Sciences, the department currently offers a major and minor in Spanish and minors in French and Portuguese.  There is also a second course of study in Swahili. The DWLC seeks to provide its students and graduates with the knowledge, skills and attitudes that are necessary in the workplace and in the larger context of the global society in the pursuit of becoming a true world citizen.  The study of languages, literatures and cultures will develop those analytic skills required for effective participation in society.  Additionally, within the context of history, politics and popular culture, the study of language in the DWLC will expand the horizons and cultural intelligence of each individual.   It will also present a panorama of new ideas, customs, habits and values that dissolve borders, create cultural contacts and provide unprecedented opportunities.

Knowing another language increases one's global horizons, expands career opportunities, enhances all twenty-first century skills, and enriches a deeper understanding of "diverse cultural attitudes and behaviors" of worlds outside one's own.
