Students from Winston Salem State Department of Physical Therapy and Wake Forest School of Medicine Department of Orthopaedic Surgery complete research projects in the lab. Faculty mentors help the students learn about research design and data collection and analysis. These projects are presented at research symposiums at the completion of their time in the lab.
Hip Exam Video
This hip examination video exemplifies the modern hip examination in light of recent orthopaedic knowledge advancement in regards to acetabular labral pathology, hip stability, and femeroacetabular impingement.
The physical examination of the pre-arthritic hip patient remains a challenging and poorly understood area of orthopaedic surgery. With the emergence of an algorithm of hip preservation strategies comprising arthroscopy, osteotomy, and arthroplasty, the importance of a properly conducted history and physical examination cannot be over emphasized. As MRI technology has not kept pace with the understanding of the continuum of hip pathology, the art of diagnosis rests with the skills of the orthopaedic practitioner.
This video captures the hip patient physical examination techniques integrating historical aspects of the hip examination with modern concepts of intraarticular and extraarticular pathology. Consideration into all possible components of disease which may masquerade as hip pain in the pre-arthritic patient is paramount. Our videographed physical examination is accompanied by computer generated animation produced at Wake Forest University's Human Performance and Biodynamics Laboratory. This video is intended to educate orthopaedic surgeons in training as well as experienced orthopaedists with an interest in the hip.
