Evidence of Student Learning
WSSU regularly reports data for skills tests, surveys, and student success measures to gauge students' abilities, perceptions, and satisfaction with a variety of units and services on campus. In addition, all units are expected to report results within the university's assessment management system (TracDat). Results are displayed in each unit's TracDat four-column report. These data are used by a variety of decision-makers on campus to inform changes.
Beginning in 2016, several surveys will be available in an interactive dashboard. Previous data from the student, faculty and staff assessments and student skills test are available below. Please click the plus sign beside each assessment to learn more and access the results.

Student Survey Reports
The Cooperative Institutional Research Program (CIRP) Freshman Survey is administered by the Higher Education Research Institute (HERI) at UCLA. Informing colleges and universities since 1966, the CIRP Freshman Survey has collected data on over 13 million students at over 1,900 institutions, and is the largest American study of higher education. The CIRP Freshman Survey is designed to provide comprehensive information on incoming first-year students.
Participating institutions receive a detailed profile of their entering freshman class, as well as national normative data for students in similar types of institutions.
Through its student survey, The College Student Report, the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) annually collects information at hundreds of four-year colleges and universities about student participation in programs and activities that institutions provide for their learning and personal development. The results provide an estimate of how undergraduates spend their time and what they gain from attending college.
Survey items on the College Student Report represent empirically confirmed "good practices" in undergraduate education. NSSE doesn’t assess student learning directly, but survey results point to areas where colleges and universities are performing well and aspects of the undergraduate experience that could be improved.
The UNC surveys are administered at UNC campuses, and the data are reported to UNC General Administration.
The UNC Sophomore Survey is administered to sophomores in the Spring semester each year. It gathers information about the students’ experiences after two years.

The UNC Senior Survey is administered to graduating seniors in the Fall and Spring semesters each year. It gathers information about the students’ summary experiences as well as their immediate future plans.
Beginning in summer 2017, Winston-Salem State University administers all course evaluations online through Qualtrics. Students are asked to complete an evaluation for each course in order to give the instructor(s) constructive feedback. Aggregate reports are available in Tableau Workbooks.
Instructors are asked to assess one assignment for each of their courses that maps to a WSSU institutional learning outcome. The assignments are scored using the appropriate rubric, and score frequencies are reported on a survey. Co-curricular activities mapped to institutional learning outcomes are also invited to submit rubric data through the online survey. The WSSU Student Learning Outcome Report is now available in a Tableau workbook.
Faculty & Staff Survey Reports
Each spring, faculty and staff are invited to complete satisfaction surveys electronically. They are administered annually in order to gather feedback on the following topics:

The Faculty Survey of Student Engagement (FSSE) was designed to complement the NSSE, which is administered to undergraduate students. The faculty version focuses on:
- Faculty perceptions of how often students engage in different activities.
- The importance faculty place on various areas of learning and development.
- The nature and frequency of faculty-student interactions.
- How faculty members organize their time, both in and out of the classroom.
This survey of faculty job satisfaction is administered every three years. It is part of a national program called COACHE - the Collaborative on Academic Careers in Higher Education - which has been operating from the Harvard Graduate School of Education since 2003. COACHE is a consortium of over 160 colleges, universities and systems across North America committed to making the academic workplace more attractive and equitable for faculty. While there are many surveys that faculty are asked to complete, this one is designed entirely to determine their current job satisfaction compared to faculty at peer institutions. Participation entails completing a 25-minute, web-based survey.
The Collegiate Learning Assessment (CLA) is a product of the Council for Aid to Education. The CLA measures students’ writing and analytical skills. Samples of freshmen students are tested each fall, and senior students are tested each spring. The results are compared across the samples at an institution for a measure of valued added by the institution. Results are also benchmarked against other participating institutions.
The ETS Major Field Tests are comprehensive undergraduate and MBA outcomes assessments designed to measure the critical knowledge and understanding obtained by students in a major field of study. The Major Field Tests go beyond the measurement of factual knowledge by helping educators evaluate students’ ability to analyze and solve problems, understand relationships and interpret material from their major field of study. ETS offers comprehensive national comparative data for the Major Field Tests. Students typically take the Major Field Tests during their final year of study, after they successfully complete most of their major’s required courses. The test is administered in a proctored environment.
The ETS Proficiency Profile (formerly the Measure of Academic Proficiency and Progress, or MAPP) is a test that assesses critical thinking, reading, writing and mathematics. The tests are administered online in a proctored setting. National comparative data for the Proficiency Profile is available.
The ETS HEIghten project is a joint effort between the UNC system and ETS. In 2015 and 2016 we worked with ETS to pilot Critical Thinking and Written Communication assessments. The assessments are completed online in a proctored setting. Institutional Assessment and Research will alert faculty of future assessment opportunities.
