Photography Requests

To fulfill requests in a professional and timely manner, please request photographic services at least five business days in advance. A Project Initiation Form must be submitted before work can begin on any job. While we appreciate your timely requests, we do not operate on a "first-come, first-served" basis. IMC prioritizes photography coverage to ensure that images from campus-related events can be used in multiple internal and external publications. After-hours and weekend photography requests must be approved in advance. Please allow IMC ample time to secure approval.

If Photographic Services is not able to meet your needs directly, we may refer your requests for photography to an approved freelance photographer. If your request needs to be referred to a freelance photographer, Photographic Services will serve as project manager for the job and handle related tasks. Please note that the requesting department must cover the fee associated with using a freelance photographer.

We also provide several digital cameras that can be loaned out on a first-come, first-served basis. These cameras are for University use only, and a University ID is required for checkout.

Use of University Photography

All photographs created by the Office of Marketing and Communications' staff are the property of Winston-Salem State and are available for non-commercial use by WSSU's students, faculty and staff or, with prior approval, off-campus media outlets and publications. Images should be credited as "WSSU Photo/photographer's name" in all print and electronic publications.

Any other use of the Office of Marketing and Communications-produced photographs must be approved by Photographic Services.

The Office of Marketing and Communications' photography may not be: used for commercial gain, sold in part or in total, or used as stock photography. Prior approval from WSSU Photographic Services is required before any photograph is digitally altered in a manner that changes its editorial representation. Digitally altered photos must also be clearly identified as "photo illustrations."

Photo Release Policy

As a public University, Winston-Salem State often uses photographic and electronic images of campus life, events, ceremonies and other activities to advance the mission of the institution.

By registering at, visiting or being employed by WSSU and being present in public settings, you authorize the use and reproduction by the University, or anyone authorized by the University, of any photographs taken while at WSSU without compensation. All photographic prints and digital photo files shall constitute WSSU property, solely and completely.

It is, however, recommended that a photo release form be signed by all individuals who will be photographed for University publications, videos and Web pages. If the subject is a minor under the age of 18, a form must be signed by the child's parent or guardian and secured before any photography can take place.
