WSSU shows off new Allegacy Federal Credit Union Student Resource Center at ribbon cutting, grand opening

Winston-Salem State University hosted a ribbon cutting and grand opening of its new Allegacy Federal Credit Union Student Resource Center on Jan. 23, addressing food insecurity and enabling a lifeline of extended support for student success.

Located on the ground floor of the Thompson Student Activities Center, the nearly 1,000-square foot facility features a food pantry and offers professional clothing complete with dressing rooms and mirrors. The previous location located on the second floor of Thompson was a modest 255 square feet.

“It’s no secret that if you’re hungry, you can’t focus or concentrate. Unfortunately, food insecurity is a very real issue affecting college students across the nation, and research shows that it significantly hinders academic success,” said WSSU Chancellor Bonita Brown.

“Here at Winston-Salem State University, we are committed to addressing this challenge head-on. Thanks to the incredible partnership and generosity of Allegacy Federal Credit Union, we are celebrating the expansion of our Student Resource Center, now fittingly renamed, the Allegacy Federal Credit Union Student Resource Center.”

Allegacy contributed $120,000 to make the expansion possible but also committed an additional $5,000 annually for the next five years to sustain and grow the service.

“As a financial cooperative, we believe strongly that financial well-being is a driver of holistic well-being,” said Brian Vannoy, Allegacy’s chief operating officer. “When we think about how we can help our members thrive, it’s about helping them strive in many other parts of their lives and removing barriers. You all are doing such amazing work to remove barriers to student success. We are honored to be a part of the great work that’s being done here at Winston-Salem State University.”

“It’s called the ‘people helping people philosophy’ in the credit union space,” said Lori Trimm, Allegacy’s community and financial wellbeing manager. “This is what really drives what we do and bring our existence full circle. We are excited to see this space and what it will hold – not only today but in the future. And we look forward to seeing many students utilizing the space.”

Both WSSU and Allegacy leadership recognized Dr. Jon Kapell, interim dean of students, for his efforts in leading the project, as well as the facilities department and volunteers.

The new center serves as a beacon of hope to students and a symbol of shared commitment that every student has an opportunity to thrive despite their personal circumstances, said John D. Kirby Jr., WSSU’s assistant vice chancellor for University Advancement.

“This partnership transcends mere philanthropy but embodies the essence of WSSU’s motto: Enter to learn. Depart to serve,” Kirby said. “What Allegacy understands is that to serve alone is noble, but to serve together is powerful.”

Donations can be dropped off at the Student Resource Center during its open hours (check hours here). If the center is closed, drop items off at the Dean of Students Office in Thompson 303.
