WSSU launches Transfer and Adult Student Services unit to support growing student population

Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) is strengthening its commitment to transfer and adult learners with the launch of a new Transfer and Adult Student Services unit. Set to begin operations in April 2025, the unit will be housed within the Enrollment Management Division and will provide essential support services tailored to transfer and adult students.

Under the leadership of Precious Anderson, director of transfer and adult student services, the new unit aims to streamline enrollment processes, improve student support and enhance academic success. Micaiah Hinds will serve as the assistant director. With this dedicated team, WSSU is poised to offer a welcoming and supportive environment for transfer and adult students.

“Enrollment growth will be driven by adult and transfer students. We are establishing this new unit to meet the unique needs of our transfer and adult learner population,” said Cheryl Pollard, associate vice chancellor for enrollment management.

Addressing the Needs of Transfer and Adult Learners
The creation of this unit comes as WSSU responds to increasing demand from nontraditional students. Data shows that adult learners—defined as those 25 and older—are a growing segment of the higher education population. WSSU aims to ease their transition into college life by providing dedicated resources to help them navigate the admissions process, secure financial aid, and succeed academically.

For students with prior college experience, the Transfer and Adult Student Services unit will offer streamlined entry processes and preliminary advising and transfer credit evaluation to maximize credit transferability. Additionally, WSSU will focus on addressing the unique challenges faced by adult first-time students, including balancing coursework with work and family responsibilities.

Services and Support Offered
Located in the Thompson Center, Suite 202, the unit will operate Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Fridays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The office will serve prospective and current undergraduate transfer and adult students by offering:

• Recruitment & Outreach: Design your college experience with information provided during recruitment events, virtual sessions, and campus visits, while fostering partnerships with community colleges.
• Transfer Credit Evaluation & Articulation: Maximize your transfer credits through transcript evaluations to determine equivalencies.
• Admissions & Enrollment Support: Receive personal assistance with admissions applications and scholarship information.
• Onboarding & Orientation: Providing specialized programs to acclimate students to WSSU’s academic and social environment.
• Academic Advising & Support: Offer preliminary advising on course selection and degree progression.
• Student Engagement & Retention Initiatives: Creating peer mentorship programs and resources to promote student success.
• Graduation Clearance & Degree Completion Support: Helping students track progress toward graduation and navigate re-entry programs for degree completion.
