Winston-Salem State University reports highest enrollment growth in years

Winston-Salem State University is celebrating its highest enrollment growth in years with 4,962 students enrolled this fall. The increase represents a 4.7 percent jump from the previous year, fueled by new technology, innovative outreach programs and marketing, and a renewed focus on student engagement.

Among the total enrollment are 1,003 new first-time freshmen, marking the third consecutive year of growth.

WSSU’s Graduate School has also reached its highest enrollment in a decade, with 679 students, marking a 15 percent increase over last year. Officials say the surge reflects both new graduate offerings and re-establishment of the graduate college.

“Welcoming our largest freshman class in recent history and seeing such strong growth in graduate programs reflects the hard work of our faculty and staff, the strength of our academic offerings and our responsibility for student success,” said Chancellor Bonita Brown. “These numbers reflect our commitment to innovation, access and the kind of student-centered experience that prepares our graduates to lead and serve.”

A key driver of WSSU’s enrollment growth was the implementation of a new customer relationship management system that streamlined admissions, resulting in nearly 15,000 applications.

Brown also took to the road to boost recruitment through the “Ramily Road Tours,” which connected with high school students, parents, alumni and community leaders. Stops in Charlotte, Durham, Atlanta, Greenville and Forsyth County gave prospective students a firsthand look at WSSU’s programs and student life.

Back on campus, WSSU reimagined recruitment and transition programs to better support students and families. The university redesigned its Open House into “The Ram Experience,” a full-immersion showcase of university life.  For admitted students, WSSU introduced a series of programs aimed at easing the transition to college by celebrating acceptance and guiding students through enrollment. Ram Rush, held just before the start of the semester, provided a final opportunity for incoming freshmen, transfers and readmitted students to register for classes, secure housing, and meet with wellness and financial aid staff.

The enrollment surge was further driven by WSSU’s “Rams Take Charge” marketing campaign, which met students where they are and shared the distinct value of a WSSU education.

“In my first year as chancellor, nothing has inspired me more than seeing so many students choose WSSU,” Brown said. “This record growth is proof that our legacy is alive, and our promise is strong. WSSU truly is an Opportunity College that is not only growing but thriving.”
