WSSU opens Nurse’s Nook, a new learning resource center for nursing students
Winston-Salem State University officially opened its Nurse’s Nook with a ribbon cutting on August 27. The new space, located on the second floor of the F.L. Atkins Building, is designed to serve as a hub of academic support and success for students in the Division of Nursing.
Brittany Glover, student success retention coordinator, who conceptualized and led the project, said the vision behind the Nurse’s Nook is to provide a welcoming environment that empowers nursing students to feel prepared and confident as they navigate one of the university’s most rigorous programs.
“The Nurse’s Nook is more than a study space – it’s a space for student support, community and success,” Glover said. “Because this has been my project from start to finish, I am proud of the foundation it will provide for our nursing students.”
The space is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and is designed to be flexible, functioning as a study hall and tutoring center for nursing students with a quiet zone located next door. Peer tutors will operate out of the center, and faculty members will also be available to provide remediation and guidance.
Dr. Stevie Lawrence, provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs, emphasized that the Nurse’s Nook represents another investment in student success.
“This will be a Learning Resource Center for our nursing and health sciences students,” Lawrence said. “It is yet another resource and investment to help our students reach their academic goals. We want all our students, faculty and staff to take advantage of this space.”
Dr. Leslee Battle, dean of the School of Health Sciences, noted that the resource center will be instrumental in helping nursing students thrive.
“This is important to help our nursing students succeed and progress without struggles,” Battle said. “It provides a place for tutoring and even a quiet zone for students to decompress.”
Students have already expressed excitement about the space. Zharia Hobbs, a junior nursing major with a minor in public health, shared that she sees the Nurse’s Nook as an invaluable resource.
“Sometimes teachers serve multiple roles, and this just takes some of the load off faculty and staff while giving us the extra support that we need and love,” Hobbs said. “As it grows in popularity, I believe it will be utilized.”
