Office of Faculty Affairs

The mission of the Office of Faculty Affairs (OFA) is to support the building of distinguished, strong faculties that foster a vibrant academic community here at Winston-Salem State University (WSSU). The OFA collaborates with faculty and administrators to manage matters related to faculty recruitment, appointment, tenure and promotion, and academic leadership development. WSSU faculty is the core of this institution and the OFA is committed to supporting the diverse needs of all academic units and their faculty, in alignment with the university’s dedication to the development of students through excellence in teaching, scholarship and service at this historically Black constituent institution of the University of North Carolina.

Administrative Structure

  • Faculty Affairs Manager

Oversees the Faculty Affairs office including faculty recruitment, promotion and tenure, phased retirement, employee relations, Digital Measures-Activity Insight. This individual is the point of contact for issues related to EHRA faculty.

  • University Program Specialists
    • Oversees the School of Health Sciences; works with administrative processing of contracts, faculty recruitment including adjuncts, record keeping, and the first point of contact for faculty-related questions including Banner and People Admin processes from the School of Health Sciences.
    • Oversees the College of Arts, Sciences, Business, and Education; works with administrative processing of contracts, faculty recruitment including adjuncts, record keeping, and the first point of contact for faculty-related questions including Banner and People Admin processes from CASBE.
  • University Program Associate

The first point of contact for incoming calls to Faculty Affairs, serves as a backup for university program specialists; facilitates the Faculty Awards program, by processing of applications, and coordinating the program; processes New-Hire paperwork; maintains communication for new full-time faculty; coordinates new faculty orientation scheduling; supports administrative processing of the Faculty Affairs office.

Important Policies

  • EEODF training

Faculty Affairs often works with the Office of Equal Employment Opportunity/Affirmative Action and Diversity. All university supervisors need to complete Equal Employment Opportunity and Diversity Fundamentals (EEODF) training in compliance with North Carolina state policy.

The Human Resources Training Specialist, has compiled multiple training programs related to management, conflict resolution, team building, et al. These programs are available as tiered management training certifications or individual course modules. Contact the training specialist to register for a program.

  • PeopleAdmin

The Departments of Faculty Affairs and Human Resources have implemented this system in order to automate many of the functions of position management, employment application process, and performance management. The “Position Management” Module will automate all requests for position establishment, position changes, and salary adjustments for SPA, EPA Non-Faculty, Faculty, and Postdoctoral positions. The “Applicant Tracking” Module allows users to review postings, review applications, create a guest user account for search committee member, and create the hiring proposal for the selected candidate.

Performance Management Program

    • The “Performance Management Module” or ePMP is another feature in PeopleAdmin that houses the work plan for the evaluation of SHRA and EHRA Non-Faculty positions.
    • The performance cycle for SHRA employees ends on March 31.
    • SHRA final appraisals may be conducted March 1-April 30.
    • Ratings and comments with final signatures must be submitted to Human Resources no later than May 15.
    • The performance cycle for EHRA employees ends on April 30.
    • EHRA final appraisals may be conducted April 1-May 31.
    • Ratings and comments with final signatures must be submitted to Human Resources no later than June 15.
