200.14 - Cross-Listing Undergraduate and Graduate Classes

University Group Policy #200.14

I.  Policy Statement

The Graduate School requires that a graduate-level course cross-listed with an undergraduate course should have significantly different requirements for graduate students enrolled in the same course. It is therefore the policy of Winston-Salem State University that syllabi for courses cross-listed clearly specify the nature (quality and/or quantity) of the work expected of students and the criteria for evaluation of the work produced must be commensurate with degree level.

II.     Definitions

Deans/Department Chairs/Graduate Program Coordinators are responsible for assuring that course syllabi within their programs satisfy this policy through timely review of syllabi prior to distribution.

III.    Guidelines

No courses should be cross listed within the 1000-3000 range. Only courses numbered above 4000 should be cross listed with graduate courses. The Graduate School should coordinate with the departments on cross listed courses. The additional requirements for graduate students must be significant and clearly specified. The course description for the graduate-level course should clearly identify the additional requirements (e.g., essays, readings and written assignments) that will be required for a student to receive credit toward a graduate degree. The Course Approval Form, which must be approved by the Graduate School, should also include the justification for cross-listing the undergraduate-level course and the graduate-level course, rather than offering two separate courses.

IV.     Applicability

This policy applies to Deans/Department Chairs/Graduate Program Coordinators of Winston-Salem State University.
