Descriptions of Fall 2020 workshops:

Effective Study Habits

The new semester has begun. Now is the time to implement best practices when it comes to study skills. We will reveal the top 10 ideas on how to use your time better and study more efficiently. Learn how to choose the right study environment, avoid doing things at the last minute, use “time blocking” to organize time, employ a flash card system to remember ideas from lectures … and much more!

Electronic Communications Etiquette

The need to communicate well in writing is not new, but the move from paper to electronic communication has changed the way we do things. Email, text, and social media have become preferred methods for communicating, whether with professors or with work associates. This workshop will review the rules of etiquette for electronic platforms to help you communicate effectively without jeopardizing your personal, educational, and business relationships.

Dealing with Stress and Emotions

It may surprise you to know that dealing with our emotions is a skill that we can learn. In this workshop, we will discover how to be more aware of, more in control of, and more appropriately expressive of our emotions. Techniques will be presented that will allow participants to better handle interpersonal relationships using wisdom and empathy, even when the situation itself is stressful.

Reading for Life: Understanding Everyday Contracts

This practical workshop will prepare you for reading essential documents. Learn the important things to look for in basic contracts, rental agreements, loan paperwork, and other documents that you will encounter in life. We will practice together using sample documents to illustrate the kinds of contracts that are typically used.

Assertive Communication

There are three communication types: passive, aggressive, and assertive. Assertive communication, regarded as the preferred type of communication, is a “way of communicating feelings, thoughts and beliefs in an open, honest manner without violating the rights of others.” In this workshop, we will learn about the 3 C’s of assertive communication – confidence, clarity, and control – and how to apply them to a variety of real-world situations.

Solving Problems with Critical Thinking

Like any other skill, learning to think critically takes time, perseverance, and proactivity. Critical thinking applies to so much of our lives. When we know the right steps to take, and how to apply them to issues we are dealing with, we will become better problem-solvers and more confident decision-makers.

Secrets of Customer Service

College students and recent graduates often find work in the service industry. These jobs require that employees exhibit strong customer service skills. This workshop will reveal the secrets to excellent service. Learn the answers to such questions as: How do I deal with complaints? What does my customer really want from me? How do my words directly impact customer service?
