Supplemental Instruction (SI) is an academic support program that targets historically challenging courses. The main aim is to enhance student performance and retention by providing regular, peer-led group study sessions. These sessions focus on collaborative learning, critical thinking, and study strategies tailored to specific courses.

What SI is Not:

  • It is not a remedial program – it targets difficult courses, not "at-risk" students.
  • It is not just for students who are struggling – it's designed to help all students, regardless of their academic proficiency, to improve understanding and course grades.
  • It is not merely group tutoring or a Q&A session – the emphasis is on collaborative group work and interactive engagement with course content.

The sessions are facilitated by SI Leaders who:

  • Are currently enrolled WSSU students who have demonstrated excellence in the specific supplemental instruction course they will be leading and facilitating.
  • Have strong academic skills and a deep understanding of the supported courses.
  • Are selected based upon applications, faculty recommendations, and interviews.
  • Attend class lectures, take notes, and meet frequently with the instructor of the SI course in order to prepare for effective and productive SI sessions.
