Writing & Communication Center
Your Road to Better Writing and Communication - "The Write Way"
The Writing and Communication Center (also known as “The Write Way”) offers free writing, reading and other communication assistance to WSSU students, faculty and staff. We will work with you on your level of skill and comfort to identify strengths and areas of improvement. Our staff will help you understand the writing process and a variety of rhetorical devices such as purpose, audience, organization, language, and conventions. Our goal is to build skills that will help you become a more confident, self-sufficient writer, reader and communicator.
Staffed by professional writing faculty and trained peer consultants, the WCC provides:
- face-to-face consultations for individuals and groups in a comfortable, friendly environment;
- online consultations for non-traditional students;
- morning, evening and Sunday hours;
- classroom visits to assist faculty with large group instruction;
- workshops for special concentration areas, such as research and documentation, individual and group presentations skills and reading.
Located on the 3rd floor of the Student Success Center in Hill Hall, the WCC is a comfortable place to write, to receive feedback on writing projects, and to use tools and resources in a community environment. If you have any questions, please contact us at 336-750-8748 or via email@example.com.
Our consultants and faculty help writers understand the writing process and a variety of rhetorical devices such as purpose, audience, organization, language, and conventions. We also work with clients on developing essay components such as thesis statements, topic sentences, introductions and conclusions.
If your schedule doesn’t allow for a face-to-face appointment, or you need assistance after normal WCC hours, we can assist you. Schedule your appointment through Upswing, an online, easy to use service designed for convenient, virtual tutoring. In order to maximize your face-to-face consultations, we also invite you to use Upswing for editing and proofreading help, such as grammar and syntax help.
Hours of Operation
The WCC has staff available to help you Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Tuesday and Thursday, 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Our satellite location, O’Kelly Library, provides evening consultations on Wednesdays, 8:00 p.m. to midnight, and on Sundays, 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
While most of clients are students, we are also available for other members of our WSSU family. Faculty can schedule classroom visits and workshops with one of our trained consultants or writing faculty.
The WCC will offer at least 3 workshops each semester to the general campus. These scheduled events will be published and advertised each semester.
In addition to general campus workshops, faculty can schedule writing faculty, writing consultants, or a reading specialist to conduct a workshop in their classroom. Some topics offered in the past are study skills, textbook reading, notetaking, editing papers, APA and MLA format. These workshops can also be catered to the faculty or class needs. If you have any questions, please contact us at 336-750-8748 or via firstname.lastname@example.org.
