Biography

Dr. Kapell joined Winston-Salem State University in June of 2021.  He currently serves as the Assistant Dean of Students within the Division of Student Affairs.  He provides guidance within the Office of the Dean of Students, supervising the application of the Code of Student Conduct through the Office of Community Standards and Civility.  He also oversees the Threat Assessment Team and the RamCARES Team, responsible for assisting students in their success when facing obstacles and challenges.  Dr. Kapell is also responsible for the Student Resource Center, which encompasses the Rams Helping Hands Food Pantry and the Career Closet.  He also works collaboratively to administer multiple grants including funding from the UNC System Office to support student success through mental health and wellness, and funding from The Home Depot to enhance the WSSU campus.

Prior to this role at WSSU, Dr. Kapell provided leadership, vision, and direction to the University of Student Engagement and Activities (USAE) office and its staff, in addition to serving as the primary advisor to the Student Government Association.  USAE is responsible for engaging and retaining students across the multiple areas including: the Student Government Association; Fraternity and Sorority Life; Royal Court, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion programming; the Campus Activities Board (CAB); the Campus Life Marketing Committee (CLMC); Registered Student Organizations (RSOs) and their resources; Male Initiatives; Student Centers, including the Donald Julian Reeves Student Center and the Cleon F. Thompson Student Center; and student leadership development programs.

Before coming to WSSU, Dr. Kapell served as the Director of Campus Activities & Involvement at the University of North Carolina Wilmington (2006-2021), the Associate Director of Campus Activities at Drexel University (2000-2006), and the University of Massachusetts Amherst (1998-2000).
