What is FERPA?

FERPA, the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974, is a federal law that pertains to the release of and access to educational records. The law, also known as the Buckley Amendment, applies to all schools that receive funds under an applicable program of the US Department of Education.

Schools may disclose, without consent, "directory" information such as a student's name, address, telephone number, place of birth, honors and awards, and dates of attendance. However, institutions must tell parents and eligible students about directory information and allow parents and eligible students a reasonable amount of time to request that the institution not disclose directory information about them. The official notification to notify parents and eligible students of their rights under FERPA may be found in WSSU’s Winston-Student Handbook.
